GUESTS: Rusty Brown, David Tompson

What could be merrier than our year end Rotary meeting held at the home of Janice and Rusty Brown, complete with Christmas decorations and festive holiday trimmings?

Even the snow couldn’t keep the good crowd away! There were lots of hors d’oeuvres, holiday toasts, roast ham with all the trimmings and tortes of all sorts. It was a festive way to end the year.

Halfway through the evening, we learned that it was the birthday of our hostess, so we honored Janice and sang a Rotary “Happy Birthday’. What a tribute to “Service Above Self” to host a Rotary dinner on your Birthday, thank you, Janice…. We all had a great time and thank both, Rusty and Janice, for the superb evening.

A brief meeting was held following our desserts. A proposal was made and passed to honor Eli Jordan with an honorary Rotary membership and a special Rotary plaque to remember his work with our club in hosting the Cushing School Christmas Dinners at Barker Tavern for over 25 years.

The South Shore Rotary Council has invited our club and all district clubs to attend an After Christmas Party on Wednesday January 16 at 6 p.m. However it conflicts with a very informative presentation that has been booked to feature Daniel Rabinov, to be speaking on legal issues. We will look into holding this date open in 2009 on our Club calendar, so we can make it happen and join with many members of District 7950.

Our next meeting date is set for January 9th and is a Club Night, so see you all in the New Year 2008! Holiday blessings to all of our Rotary Families.

Respectfully submitted,
Sandra Schipul,
Secretary

Dietrich gave us the good news that Lauren Miller has requested and been accepted as the newest member of the Rotary Club of Scituate, as of December 12. We will look forward to her return from Florida , and welcoming her officially.

Also suggested was that we extend a status of Member Emeritus to any member who has distinguished themselves in any of the following capacities: two-term President, President and Chair of the Supervisory Board, District Governor or Assistant District Governor, District Director. Present qualifying members are: Alden Mitchell, Bill Coulter, Don Sladen, Janet Schmitz, Lewis Burridge and Walter Heller.

It was noted that the Cardinal Cushing School Christmas Party at the Barker Tavern was a huge success, measured by the smiles and gratitude of all the students. This union of Rotary and The Barker Tavern was begun 25 years ago by one of our Club Rotarians who was a close friend of Eli Jordan (owner and operator of the Tavern). The Jordan family still sponsors this Christmas Party and underwrites all costs except the dinner tabs of our Rotarians. So to show our gratitude, the club will look into making Eli an Honorary Rotarian.

Suzanne introduced our special guests from Carolina Hill, Jackie Freitas and Barbara McIver. Jackie was a former school teacher and became involved in this worthy cause seven years ago and it is her job to provide support for the 16 homeless families who reside there. The families are in transition to be placed in subsidized housing and only stay at Carolina Hill for six months to a year. Currently 20 children under the age of 8 are in residency with their parents and were very grateful to receive the computers that we have donated for school and entertainment use. Bernie Westerfield has been upgrading their programs on behalf of Rotary.

We had a wonderful evening in the spirit of the holiday, with a blazing Yule Log in the fireplace and the feeling of Christmas all around.

We will have one more meeting this year, at Janice and Rusty Brown’s home in Norwell on December 19.

Respectfully submitted,
Sandra Schipul
Club Secretary

Rotary members and guests enjoying the annual Cushing School Christmas Party

ATTENDANCE: President M. Johnson, D. Bilger, L. Burridge, W. Clark, M. Cohan, B. Coulter, W. Heller, S. Kavanagh, J. Kelley, K. Kelley, A. Mitchell, B. Nuboer, B. Price, J. Rego, S. Schipul, J. Schmitz, D. Sladen, L. Thompson, D. Waterfield

GUESTS: Joyce Coulter, Maureen Gill, Jan Isbrandt, Dave Isbrandt, Connie Mitchell, Al Rego, Jean Schmitz, Carol Sladen

Our Annual Cushing School Christmas Party at Barker Tavern was a wonderful holiday celebration, beginning with President Mike’s opening greeting and welcome to all of our guests. We were thrilled to have eight Rotary guests, twenty-three students and their counselors.

Equally impressive was the Barker Tavern wait staff, who donated their time and service to make it a special evening for our Cushing guests. These adult volunteers also brought their children, ages six to twelve who helped with serving all the courses, and delighted us with their precocious expertise. The evening’s Disc Jockey, Dave, also contributes his services and knows all the student’s favorite holiday songs and dances.

This Scituate Rotary tradition has been celebrated for almost 25 years and was begun through a Rotary friendship with Barker Tavern’s owners. Eli and his family donate the magnificent Banquet Room each year and host the dinners for Cushing School’s guests and well as offering the services of their wait staff. It is a magical evening for all under the lighted garlands, with the glow of the blazing fireplace and the candles on every table!

Our own Joe Kelley appears amazingly as a perfect Santa Claus for all believers and everyone in the room applauds his entrance. He visits every table and after our huge turkey dinner, calling the students, one by one to come up to the beautifully decorated Christmas tree to receive their gifts. Oohs and Ahs rise up as they open their presents that have been generously donated by club members.

The evening culminates with the best left for last which is the dancing and the singing of holiday carols by all. Our young guests showed off their skills with the Cha Cha slide, Hokey Pokey, YMCA, the Bird Dance and the Macarena. Some Rotarians also had considerable skill and joined in on the dance floor!

What a memorable evening to make so many people happy in the true sense of the Christmas Spirit. It was a great Rotary Moment.

Sincerely submitted,
Sandra Schipul, Secretary
