ROTARY NEWSLETTER
ROTARY NEWSLETTER JANUARY 30, 2008
ATTENDANCE: President M. Johnson D. Bilger, L. Burridge, W. Clark, B. Coulter, W. Heller, J. Kelley, K. Kelley, A. Mitchell, B. Nuboer, B. Schipul, S. Schipul, J. Schmitz, L. Tompson, D. Waterfield, Bob P.
GUESTS: Speaker Alice McWilliams, Connie Mitchell
The club welcomed the return of our Captain Mike who steered our ship through a marvelous meeting including a voyage to China via presenter, Alice McWilliams.
Our club ties will soon be linked to Bangkok, Thailand, as Ray Helmick travels en route to screen and discuss the Peace/ Resolution films produced by John Michalczyk including films on South Africa, Sicily and the Middle East. It is projected that these films will be used at the International Peace Resolution Studies Center in Bangkok.
Bill Coulter outdid himself again with his WOW’s (Words of Wisdom)! This time it was Garrison Keillor’s parody on Lutherans.
Alice McWilliams “Perspectives On China” was a powerful insight into the educational curriculum of young Chinese students. Alice looked up our Rotary Motto and concluded that by sharing her trip with us, she fulfills the statement of “advancing world understanding, goodwill and peace through the education of young people”.
Alice currently teaches geography and sewing to Derby School students and also is Head of the Arts Department. Her summer immersion program took her to Beijing, Shanghai and some rural areas to witness how students are taught in the modernized Chinese schools.
She said that even the youngest students are brought up with much disciplined learning, yet they are happy to learn and are very determined to succeed. A new wave is entering the educational system that allows for more creativity and individualism. Alice is sharing her perspectives to encourage her own students to “see, think and wonder” rather than to just memorize!

Sandi,
Bob, Janet and Dietrich at the Pre-PET meeting
Janet, Bob, Sandi and Dietrich went in their respective "official" functions as Assistant District Governor, President Elect RCS, Secretary RCS and Assistant District Governor Nominee to the District's Pre-PETS (President Elect Training Seminar) meeting which introduces the Presient Elects of the Rotary Clubs in District 7950 to their jobs and responsibilities which they will assume at the start of the new Rotary year which begins July 1.
This meeting traditionally also serves as a forum at which the incoming Governor can begin to outline the District goals for 2008/9 to the Clubs.
Furthermore it provides an opportunity for the Assistant Governors to meet with their present and incoming Club Presidents.
President Elect Bob returned home with a thick file of material which will get even thicker as he will attend the full PETS meeting later in March.

ROTARY NEWSLETTER JANUARY 23, 2008
ATTENDANCE: L. Burridge, W. Clark, W. Heller, J. Kelley, K. Kelley, A. Mitchell, B. Nuboer, B. Price, B. Schipul, S. Schipul, J. Schmitz, D. Snyder, L. Tompson, D. Waterfield
GUESTS: Connie Mitchell, Walter Ford Carter
A very fitting invocation of blessings upon our members, and their families was given by Diane Waterfield, followed by a warm welcome back to Dennis Snyder. He has just returned from a Tanzania mission and was in Peru in October! Dennis updated us on the halted status of the medical container that our club has helped to sponsor. The $450,000 worth of medical equipment and supplies that is scheduled for Rwanda is being detained in Kenya and we all hope and pray for a safe and unhampered delivery as soon as possible.
In the vein of service to address the turmoil in Kenya, Bart suggested that we look into supplying a “Shelter Box” for the homeless there.
We continue to ask for the input of all of our members for ideas and project that continue to make our club strong in outreach and to also stay focused on our means of doing this, i.e., our fundraisers. Bart updated the status of our Phone Book: 188 ads in and $53,316 in gross receipts. We are getting there! Thanks Janet, Chris and all.
We also thank Dietrich and Lauren Miller (our newest member in Florida) for sharing ideas for future fundraisers for our club. We will be kept updated.
“Service above Self” was the theme of Walter Ford Carter’s presentation of “World War 11 Memoirs” as he has recently discovered the lost journals of his Father Captain Elmer N. Carter who courageously volunteered to serve our country in 1942, leaving his 2 boys and wife. He was destined to be a part of D-Day and be a battalion Dr. to the men on the fields of Normandy. Captain Carter gave his life trying to rescue a wounded soldier from the French hedgerows. Dr. Carter saved this man, who valiantly warned the American troops of the presence of the German troops and in turn saved uncountable lives.
We enthusiastically thanked our speaker for sharing the personal diary of his father and his mental and emotional struggles as well as the supreme sacrifice he made on the behalf of American freedom. May we keep the memories alive and many of us left with his book, printed by the Smithsonian Press, entitled “No Greater Sacrifice, No Greater Love.
Next week we will be looking forward to Alice McWilliams presentation on her travels to China last summer.

The
Service Learning Course Exhibit
Scituate High School President and Rotarian Donna Nuzzo Mueller at the
Exhibit.
Following is part of the Rotary letter of the Rotary event that happened parallel
to the Rotary meeting at SHS:
While most members attended the regular meeting at the Scituate Country Club, President Mike had delegated Dietrich to represent the Scituate Rotary Club at the side of Rotarian Principal Dona at the Scituate High School, where Kaitlin St. George's class held its Service Learning Course Exhibit, at which the service projects undertaken by Juniors and Seniors at SHS were shown and outlined by the students.
The format provided for the projects to be represented at the school's library in booths and the students, having worked on them in teams, explaining how their projects were conceived, implemented and what they accomplished.
The projects included work done with children hospitals, shelters and civil
responsibilities. Kaitlin and the students are invited to bring their exhibit to a presentation at the Rotary Club in April.

ROTARY NEWSLETTER
JANUARY 16, 2008
ATTENDANCE: D. Bilger, L.
Burridge, W.
Clark
, M. Cohan, C. Cramer, M. Jenkins, J. Kelley, K. Kelley, B. Nuboer, B.
Price, B. Schipul, S. Schipul, J. Schmitz, B. Summers, L. Tompson
While the faithful few came to our mid-month club meeting, our
adventuresome women, Candace, Janet, Mary and Lisa accepted the South
Shore Council of Rotary Club’s invitation to their AFTER CHRISTMAS
PARTY. Report has it that it was not only a “ball of fun” to be with
members of other clubs, but also worthwhile! Janet won the drawing for a
fleece vest and Candace won a gift card to the 99 restaurant. Our club
donation of $25 for the event paid off! Next year we will all attend.
Bart gave a great overview of Rotary International Foundation and
encouraged all to make a separate and worthy donation as do 3 of our
members who give us the status of being among the top club supporters of
this Rotary District 7950. The Rotary Foundation monies come only from
fund raisers and go out only to non-members.
This means that only club monies are used by the club for operating
expenses.
The most notable project of RI has been the Eradication of Polio
which has been effective world wide and was begun by one Rotary member of
a club in the
Philippines
and like the tiny acorn, has grown into the mightiest of oaks! We can take
faith that we only need the inspiration of outreach to make anything
possible.
Dietrich reminded us that our club has also accomplished mighty
deeds, as our fundraiser monies have grown to make this possible.
Our contributions have gone to: Habitat for
Humanity,
Scituate Scholarships, D.A.R.E., Carolina Hill, Road to Responsibility,
Water Conservation Outreach, and many others over the years as well. Some
of our international projects include: Medical Missions for Children,
Angkor Hospital
,
Kenya
projects through Capstone, Conflict Resolution studies, which our very own
Captain Michael has pioneered for Rotary and his format has recently been
adopted in
Thailand
’s
International
Studies
Center
.
This brings all the more need to focus our efforts on raising the
maximum funds from the Scituate Rotary Phone Book. We need to secure 30-40
new advertisers to our list and the deadline is January 31st.
We need all hands on board to help our club meet this goal, so check your
lists and turn in results at next week’s meeting. Thanks in advance from
the phone book committee!
Our lucky treasurer, Joe Kelley used his fantastic magical powers to
draw the Queen of Hearts from her court of cards from almost a full deck-
for a repeat performance from
earlier last year. Congratulations, Joe.

ROTARY NEWSLETTER JANUARY 9, 2008
ATTENDNCE: L. Burridge, W. Clark, M. Cohen, B. Coulter, C. Cramer, M. Jenkins, J. Kelley, K. Kelley, A. Mitchell, B. Nuboer, B. Price, J. Rego, C. Ryan, R. Schipul, S. Schipul, J. Schmitz, B. Summers, L. Tompson, D. Waterfield
Our first meeting of the New Year 2008 was conducted by Bob Schipul in the absence of Captain Michael, who is ashore, taking leave on the sunny shores of California. Bob gave a warm welcome back to all. It was a Club Night to catch up on the Phone Book and the personal news of our members through dinner fellowship and Happy and Sad Bucks. January is also ROTARY AWARENESS MONTH and so we will confirm this as we continue our outreach in projects and as we contact our Rotary Phone Book sponsors.
The Phone Book ads are slow to come in and many renewals have not been submitted due to a tight economy. We have 178 ads compared to last years 240. Chris Ryan suggested that if volunteers took 3 pages from our 2007 book and called those businesses who were not in bold type ( already having ads), then we could realize profits closer to $10,000 instead of $8,000 as the total stands now. She got a good response as follows:
Candace pages 56-58
Lisa pages 59-61
Judy pages 62-63
William C. pages 64-66
Sandi pages 67-69
Bart pages 70-72
Lew pages 73-75
Diane pages 76-78
Joe pages 79-80
Thank you volunteers, we need three additional members to finish up to page 87 ASAP since the deadline has been extended to January 31st. Please contact Chris Ryan to take 3 additional pages and she will tell you how easy this is!
The Lawson Tower will be featured on the cover page followed with Scituate history on the inside pages as given to us by the Scituate Historical Society.
We hope to have the support of everyone to make this fundraiser as successful as last year.
We are also reminded of the Von Trapp concert coming up on April 6th and will be planning publicity ads.
Candace Cramer sent us a flyer for South Shore Art Center which has a wonderful “Seeing With Photography” show ongoing now until February 10th, so please stop in to view this art done by visually impaired photographers who paint with light (flashlights illuminating their subject over long exposures in complete darkness).
Janet Schmitz reminded us that next week is the South Shore Council of Rotary Club’s After Christmas Party and all are welcome to attend on Jan 16th at 6p.m. at a cost of $30 pp. It is held at the Neighborhood Club of Quincy on 27 Glendale Rd. Contact Janet for reservations this weekend!
A very healthy and prosperous New Year to all!
Respectfully submitted,
Sandra Schipul
Club Secretary
