NEWSLETTER FOR OCTOBER 20, 2004

VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH –“Vocational service is a hallmark of our organzation…from the beginning Rotarians have advocated fair business practices and high ethical standards.” President Estess in The Rotarian, Oct. 04

Present: Pres. Walter, Coulter, Schmitz, Nuboer, Summers,  Mitchell, Sladen’s, Rego, and our speakers – Dotty Cabozzi and Jacquelynn Morganelli from Life Care Center .

Missing: Loic – in China , Suzanne – on her way to meet Loic, Dietrich – in Germany , Jack – in New York ?  Beatrice – we missed you!

Meeting highlights: Ben‘s cousin has passed on, yeah Red Sox!, Walter enjoyed the District Conference, Judy’s didn’t stay sick, and Janet had a nice cuppa after work. Bart did not find the queen and Bill provided our moment of insight – “WOW”: People do not forget how you make them feel.

Walter presented the check for Dr. Mono’s salary to Gunter Hausen in New Hampshire . He also shared the materials he has put together with “The Gift of Courage” and Donna Green. The tri-fold pamphlet is great! This will make it easy to sell Christmas trees this year. I was delighted to learn that Legs’n Wheels has come together and will be funding Pure Water for the World. This is a wonderful vehicle of Public relations to introduce everyone to Rotary. We are asked to participate and find participants for this May 21st event. I will talk about this soon…

Our speakers: Dotty Cabozzi has been the Activities Director of the Life Care Center for 25 years. Their client transport has died and it will cost  about $60,000 to replace it. Life Care Corp. will pay the balance if LCC of the SouthShore can raise $10,000. Dotty and the caring staff as well as the grateful residents have collected over 8,000 in a few weeks. But energy is waning! The new van can carry more ambulatory clients and more wheelchairs (up to 6 instead of 2). This is the only way these residents can get out and see what is going on in the world. I am truly impressed with the creativity, enthusiasm and love that exists in this facility. Residents are primarily from Scituate or nearby. These people grew up and spent a lifetime in our neighborhood.

The LifeCare Center has been a good friend to Rotary of Scituate – helping with donations in our own fundraising – from Walk for Brian to the Pancake Breakfasts and last year our venture to sell hotdogs on St. Patrick’s Day.  It is time to be a good friend to them. The Board of Directors voted to gift $500 to the van fund and the club approved of the contribution. A check was handed to Dotty on Thursday.

Keep your eyes and ears open for a possible new venue in our hometown…

Yours in Rotary,
Janet Schmitz
