CLUB NEWSLETTER for 19 January 2005
January is Rotary Awareness Month

Present: Pres. Walter, Bart, Janet, Judy, Ben, Alden and Connie, Dietrich, Donn & Carol, Karen Kelley, Sandi Schipul, guests Rep. Hynes, Colin Moore and Robert Price.

Absent: We are missing Jack and Beatrice these days…

This was a busy meeting with 2 speakers and much to discuss. Not much time for chit-chat, was there. ‘Sorry about that. But it is a good sign that we are still alive and well. Our happy-bucks stories do a good job of keeping us up to date with each other, regardless, don’t you think? I know too that it gets boring but it is a good thing to explain what is going on for our visitors. Alden taught me that.

Our first speaker was the iron sculptor, Colin Moore. Walter presented Colin as an artist who could make our Centennial bike racks for us. His ideas were great and in exchange for getting his art out to the public his price is excellent for our needs. Now we must approach the town of Scituate and perhaps the Warner’s for permission to place a rack. We already know that Jenkin’s School would happily have another rack.

Did anyone get a new mobile phone for Christmas? We are collecting old mobile phones for the same organization that is supporting The Children’s Hospital in Cambodia . Ask me about it!

State Representative Frank Hynes brought us greetings from the State House, “the oldest continually meeting legislature in the world”. The leadership is changing dramatically in style and method of working as well as in people, which should be better. He mentioned the structural deficit of $ 900 mln. that Massachusetts experiences after having been hit the worst of all states by the recent recession. For this was a high tech recession. Luckily we got into it with some reserves and also had a windfall from the tobacco lawsuits. Just as well spending of some $ 250 mln. had to be cut. Rep. Hynes also mentioned a pending lawsuit, which may lead to further penalizing rich communities like Scituate and helping poor communities in our state to improve the quality of the schools in those areas.  That should cost us some. Finally Rep. Hynes mentioned the crisis in health care insurance, as more and more employers can no longer pay the premiums. Hopefully the tort law reform pushed by the Bush Administration will give relief here.

I like the idea that the change of style is a return to the old ways of running a government. Politician will be doing more work for the people…it can only be a good thing, I think.

 RE New Members:

Sandi Schipul wants to be a friend of the club but not a member at this point. She will be welcomed as such. Karen Kelley says she is ready to become a member. She is filling out her proposal form and it will be presented to the next BOD meeting. We should get her installed before the DG visit in March. Dietrich’s guest, Robert, prefers a lunch club but would consider joining us if we make that switch. I will see that he gets additional information about Rotary and the SRC.

Have a good week, and we will meet Wed. evening at the High School.

 Yours in Rotary,

Janet
