CLUB NEWSLETTER for February 9,  2005
February is Rotary World Understanding Month

February 23rd – Rotary World Understanding and Peace Day and Rotary’s Birthday

Present: Pres. Walter, Bart, Janet, Judy, Alden, Dietrich, Loic, Donn & Carol, Karen Kelley (our newest Rotarian), second time visitors – Bob Price and George , and a big welcome back to Bill Coulter!

Absent: We miss Ben, Jack and Beatrice. Suzanne, will we ever see you again?

FYI:  Dietrich, Janet and Walter met before the meeting to collect the names of potential Rotarians from recent visitors who prefer a lunch or breakfast venue and advertisers that we think would add to our club’s good efforts. We will keep you posted on our work and ask that if you are interested in the membership issue that you ask to be a part of whatever we undertake NOW. Call the president or your editor immediately.

Last Night:    we installed Karen Kelley as a Rotarian. Karen has taken some time making her decision to join us so I think we can rest assured that she knows what she is getting into and that we have a firm commitment of long-time support. Heartfelt welcome, Karen! We look forward to the contribution of your “Community Outreach Consultant” skills.

Our Speaker:               was our own Dietrich Bilger, famous for his fund-raising as SAR and evading the Connecticut State Police. He shared his 18 month history with the German Army back in 1967. He spoke at the request of Bill and came well prepared to inform, educate and entertain us all. If you missed it, it is your loss…sorry about that. For me it was interesting to hear about the world politics at the time (I was living it but oblivious!). It was also interesting to hear about the making of a soldier and again how it is “who you know, not what you know” that shapes a life. Hummmm. Respecting decency and intelligence is laudable but I wonder if it may makes for obedient soldiers in the line of battle. What do you think, Dietrich?

Yours in Rotary,
Janet
