CLUB NEWSLETTER for March 23 and 30, 2005 Attendance:23rd – Jack & Linda, Bill, Mr. President, Alden, Bart, Judy, Janet, Donn & Carol, Ben, Karen and 3 guest speakers: Maureen Hughes (mom), Becky and Jeff Keys. 30th – Dietrich, Walter, Bill, Alden, Bart, Donn & Carol, Ben, Karen and our resident rotary visitor, Lou. The attendance for March has been sent in as 88%. This is higher this month as we gave make-up credit for PETS and the parade. Kavanagh & Hurwitch on LOA. Program: Maureen is the
Director of Christian Education at St. Luke’s and has been looking for a
summer activity for kids older than VBS/grade 5. This summer 12 It has becomes a 10 month project, not just the days of the trip as students must learn how to construct housing, learn about relationships and learn about servanthood. They also must raise money to fund their trip and all its expenses including travel, room & board, and construction initiatives. They will work from
8 AM to 6PM. They will sleep on the high school gym floor on air
mattresses. Fundraising will include a doo at St. Mary’s on April 30th.
It will be a dinner dance, an auction and fun for all. What can our contribution accomplish? $25 – paint a room; $50 - $75–Drainage ditch; $100 – foundation; $150 – roof. These kids are learning about grace, dignity and worth,
accepting all, and sanitary safe housing. That’s a lot of lesson to be learning in
a year. And a lot of that will happen in Yours in Rotary, Janet Miscellaneous news: Alden shared with me an article from the Cape Elizabeth, ME news about local town manager Michael McGovern becoming an RI Director for 2 years in July 2006. Besides being a busy Town Manager, Michael is a very busy Rotarian! He qualifies as a Director by virtue of having been a District Governor and serving on many committees. He also is the Chairman of the Leadership Institute. He is responsible for organizing the institutes which often have 500 participants. The article says that the Town Council is encouraging him to do this! It will call him away from his home duties many times in 2 years – but they think that is OK considering what Rotary offers the world. What can we do to have our locals understand the same thing. We are not asking Mr Agnew or a Selectman to be a Director we are asking to be a Rotarian. Asking for 1 ½ hours a week at most. A little something to enhance world peace and understanding… Apparently it is too much. And about the Rotary Leadership Institute: Bart and Janet are now both “graduates” while Walter has completed 2 parts and Dietrich the first part. It is a great program, open to anyone interested (a Rotarian, of course). And, of course, there is the obligation to share what is learned…span> Meeting report of 30 March: as per Dietrich Due
to illness our Secretary was not present at our last meeting March 30 and
I believe we did not nominate anybody who would do the newsletter. I
myself did not take any notes as to who was present but if challenged, my
short term memory seems to recall the following as present: Alden, Bart,
Ben, Bill, Karen, Donn and Carol, Walter, Dietrich and we were very
pleased to again have Lewis Burridge,
Among
the items requested by Walter were pictures of I did present to the club at the meeting a list of 24 people from the
communities of Marshfield and Scituate who were presented as “fast
track” prospects, who could be directly invited to become members of the
Scituate Rotary Club without further committee work, recommendation and
approvals. They are individuals which either have visited the club
already, have been speakers, are known to members of the club and have
been recommended to become members or are individuals within the community
who have been identified as being desirable to have as members of the
Scituate Rotary Club.
In
order to ensure that the club agreed with all the names on the fast track
list, a list was given to each member present for review. In
a vote it was unanimously agreed by all present to proceed with the
sending out of letters, inviting the individuals on the list to become
members of the club. As
this report was entirely done on memory, and yes, I did arrive late, and
paid my proper fine, but therefore may have missed items or may just
plainly have forgotten to include what should have been recorded here,
please advise the Secretary so that everybody can be informed.
