CLUB NEWSLETTER for May 11, 2005

Attendance: President Walter , PE Dietrich, Janet, Bart, Bill, Donn and Carol, Karen, Jack, Bob Schipul, Judy, Elizabeth and Jim Blanchard, Maryann Cohan.

We were also joined briefly by our World Seminar applicants: Beth Eromin, Bethany Murray and Jennifer Noonan who gave us thumbnail sketches of themselves. They will be traveling to Whitewater , Wisconsin June 13-18 then returning to Scituate for their final exams. Snow days have lengthened their school year. These girls are honor students, active in sports (dance, fencing, lacrosse, among others), and attentive to their peers and their community. We can be proud of  our representatives at this seminar.

Happy bucks covered the usual gambit and news and club finances were enhanced, thank you. Jim Blanchard has announced his intention to join our Rotary Club and Maryann was a walk-in guest thanks to Walter’s invitation in the Mariner. It was a good meeting to hear about Rotary and Scituate Rotary in particular. We are please you were able to be present for this meeting, Jim and Maryann. Jim will be installed in short order and we truly hope Maryann will consider us as she has so much to offer – being a teacher and in Marshfield . Maryann also offer her son to start the Interact club and suggested Mr. Geoghan, a SHS Vice Principal, as a teacher leader.

A sad buck or 4 were given for Ben. It seems he is not feeling too well right now. We all signed a card for him that Janet will give to Renee for delivery.

The High School Scholarships were selected this past week: Kassandra Babineau, Eric DiTommaso and Katherine Werner. It was a more difficult selection this year as more students presented outstanding scholarship and community commitment. It is nice that we can give 3 kids money instead of just 2 and that the amount of the award is increased to $2000 each. All students attend Scituate High.

Dietrich requested sponsors for his participation in Legsnwheels. Bart and Janet also request support. No one has committed anything yet (except for $5 from Bob Price for Janet) but we really do expect everyone to contribute something! No amount is too little or too much. Please be generous. No mother should have to choose between a slow and slower death for her child. To make things easy for computer users, go to http://www.justgiving.com/pfp/janetandbart for credit card donations. Each participant is required to raise a minimum of $100.

Janet talked about TRF (the Rotary Foundation) and its role in RI (Rotary International) and about Rotarians commitment to our foundation.

Yours in Rotary,

Janet Schmitz
