CLUB NEWSLETTER for May 18, 2005 Attendance:
President Walter,
PE Dietrich, Janet, Bart, Bill, Donn and Carol, Karen, Jack, Bob Schipul,
Judy, Loic, Jim McInnis, our newest member and Kris David, our
speaker. Alden is feeling better and visiting in ME. This
was our second lunch meeting. It feels funny, doesn’t it? I was noticing
that our usual evening agenda does not work so well at lunch time. It is a
shorter meeting mid-day and we need to adjust our program accordingly. Or
maybe we are just trying to do too much. But lunch meetings that I have
attended are more business and less socializing than evening meetings. So,
at lunch time – less fun and more work, guys and girls! We
were placed in the sun-room where I am guessing that we will spend a lot
of summer time unless we arrange something else. We are into prime party
season and the summer tourist season follows closely. We have to be
proactive about arranging suitable venues/programs through August. I
propose a July lunch swim at James Landing for one meeting. We have the
rose garden event if Alden is up for it and the installation outside Pier
44. Did we ever do the Harbor Island Cruise last year? Looking for
ideas….. Kris
David is the Area 10 Assistant Governor and is also the chair of the
Interact Committee. She came to talk to us about that. (An aside, she is
also co-chair of the Legs ‘n Wheels committee – busy lady!) Kris told
us there are 10,000 Interact clubs and 230,000 Interactors in 118
countries. They meet weekly or bi-weekly and have flexible attendance
requirements so kids can stay active in seasonal sports. Kris advised that
the officers chosen should be available throughout the sports seasons. The
club must provide an advisor to oversee their projects and assure they do
not engage in political sorts of activities. At a minimum the advisor must
attend their board meetings. The school also requires a teacher to be
responsible for every club. So maybe we will get a new member out of that.
Every Interact club is required to carry out 2 projects/year in the local
community and 2 internationally. She noted that the Abington club is
willing to adopt the new SHS club. RI.org
has forms for recruitment, PR posters, merchandise, banners, member cards,
etc.
There is to be a Charter night that we sponsor, joint meetings with
the Interact club, and fiscal support to set up their club. The school
year is about over but we hope to get a club into the SHS early in the
fall. Our visitor last week, Maryann Cohan suggested a specific teacher to
contact so I am hopeful that she will join us again and help us run with
this. The High School Scholarships were announced this past week but SHS called and asked if we would reconsider our young man, DiTomaso as he was already receiving 8 awards. We looked at our apps again and selected Thomas Watson as we do want to spread the wealth, as it were. Thomas is an equally deserving young man – we did note that our initial decision was very difficult. Legs
‘n Wheels Legs
‘n Wheels was a success but not as hugely successful as the District had
hoped. Bart ended up unable to walk (tooth problem) but he sent his
house-guest, a dutch student just ending a year of study in Virginia,
Alfred, to walk with me. We did the 5 miles in 80 minutes. That is a 16
minute mile that included 2 pee breaks! So we really did a 15 minute mile!
Not bad for an old lady. Alfred said he was impressed! I have collected
Over $850 at this point. Thank you, any who contributed to my effort. And
feel free to still do so. (Two people handed me a $20 bill on Wednesday. I
know who one was, who was the other? Please tell me! Of note is that http://www.justgiving.com/pfp/janetandbart. I
would love to turn in $1000.
