CLUB NEWSLETTER for July 27, 2005 Attendance:
Members President Dietrich, Jack, Maryann, Walter, Beatrice,
Suzanne, Karen, Jim McInnes, Alden, Bart, Bob Price, Judy, Bob Schipul,
Janet and Donn; Family of Rotary Joe Kelley, Carol Sladen, Connie
Mitchell, Linda Borror, Sandi Schipul and Eileen McInnes; and guests Mary
Jenkins and Candace Cramer. The expected International Service Chair of
the Duxbury Rotary Club did not show up. Our
Meeting: We met
in the beautiful estate of Jack and Linda Borror under the trees in
perfect weather where we feasted on dishes brought by members and spouses.
President Dietrich started with Club business which included our support
for the motorbike raffle of the Randolph Rotary Club. Under much laughter
and some confusion a club lottery was arranged which netted $150 for the
$100 ticket. It was won by Judy. Then Jim bought one and Dietrich and Bart
shared another, making our effort 3 tickets in all and earning us a
blessing from the Randolph Club President. Then the state of our own
fundraiser was reported: where we are today ($19k) and where we break even
($36k). As the key to success is obtaining new ads our champion today
is Donn with 7 new ads! Follow up is Janet with 1. Where are
you others?!? Suzanne had folders given out to members containing the
companies for each to call. After dinner Karen received a personal message from
past DG Ann Williams. Then President Dietrich, assisted by ADG Janet
Schmitz, offered the Paul Harris Fellowship Award in the name of Sgt.
Michael Jason Kelley to his parents. Speaking especially to our member
Karen he said:” The Paul Harris Fellowship Award is named for Paul
Harris who founded Rotary with 3 business associates in
This is the best our Club can do. It is also more than any of us can do
on our own. Sometimes it is
good to be part of the Scituate Rotary Club. Yours

Members President Dietrich, Jack, Maryann, Bill, Walter, Beatrice,
Suzanne, Art Kern, Jim McInnes, Alden, Bart, Judy, Bob Schipul, Donn and
Ben; Family of Rotary Carol Sladen and Francine Kern; visiting Rotarian
Lewis Burridge and as guests Mary Jenkins, Michael Johnson and Candace
Cramer. Our
Meeting:
The
purpose of this meeting was to first activate the many committees for the
year 2005-2006 and second to work on the Telephone book fundraiser.
Therefore members were given assigned seats in order to meet with their
fellow committee members. However, Maryann, Walter and Bart had all
brought a visitor with them and the restaurant had not expected that,
leading to some confusion and moving of tables. This club has a new “élan”
and many more surprises will be on the upside in President Dietrich’s
year I predict. So the committees were activated and will all report at
the next Board Meeting on August 2. Vice President Bill gave his “Words
of Wisdom”, this time defining God and Secretary Bart mentioned 2
statistics: 1. Through the Polio Plus project every Rotarian has saved 4
people from contracting polio; and 2. our Club in the past 2 years had a
meeting, enjoyed a program and gave away $500 every week. He also showed
the thank you note from Katie Werner for her scholarship; our letter to
“Friends without Borders” telling them that we will continue to
support the Children’s Hospital in Angkor, Cambodia by paying the salary
of the dentist Dr. S. Mono which now costs $400 a month; proposed to give
the Etrusco Associates a free ad in our telephone book; and proposed we
support the motorbike raffle of the Randolph Rotary Club by buying one or
more $100 tickets. Then President Dietrich gave the hammer to Suzanne who
organized everybody in groups of 2 to go through telephone books of
surrounding towns and see who advertised there and not with us. The room
became a beehive full of workers. Janet’s financial “thermometer”
showing where we are today ($17k), where we break even ($36k),
where we ended last year ($56k) and where President Dietrich expects us to
get ($70k) was not needed anymore. As the key to success is obtaining new
ads our champion today is Donn with 4 new ads (and 4 more in the
pipeline, he says). Follow up is Janet with 1. As Donn is also our oldest
member it feels like age is recommended for this fundraiser, or?!! Anyone
succeeding with a new ad will be mentioned during this campaign and
remembered in the following years. Also $10 will be paid in her/his name
to the R.I.Foundation counting to your PHF. It was long after the official
closing hour that the last workers left “Pier 44”.

CLUB NEWSLETTER for July 13, 2005 From President Dietrich: Photos of the first board meeting of the 2005-2006 year:
From Secretary Bart: Attendance: All
members (except Jim Blanchard and Bob Price); our spouses Carol Sladen,
Joyce Coulter, Renee Summers, Linda Borror, Connie Mitchell and daughter
Betsy; Interactors Austin Crumpton, Kerry Sorensen and Bill Grace and as
special guests our 3 scholarship winners Tom Watson with Mrs. Margaret
Watson; Kassandra Babineau with Mr. Reginald and Mrs. Deborah Babineau;
and Katherine Werner with Mrs. Nancy Werner and sister Miss Emily Werner.
We were 32 in all. Karen Kelley and Jim McInnes were absent on Club
business: they represented us in the Scituate Council on Elders meeting.
Our Meeting: Traditionally our Club
awards the scholarships in Alden’s Rose Garden when the weather is good,
and in his house when it is bad, This time it was gorgeous and we all
enjoyed the beautiful environment of our Charter member Alden. The
invocation was performed by Ben who said a most impressive prayer I plan
to quote to you in a later letter. In his speech President Dietrich
welcomed those present and in true Rotary spirit gave the 3 scholarship
winners his “words of wisdom”, this time going more
modern quoting John Wesley (1703-1791): “Do all the good you can,
by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you
can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you
ever can”. He wished them well in their new schools: Tom in
Worcester Polytechnic where he plans to study Mechanical Engineering with
a view to building cars; Kassandra to
Janet
showed a big financial “thermometer” she had created showing where we
are today ($13k), where we break even ($36k), where we were last year
($56k) and where President Dietrich expects us to get ($70k). As the key
to success is obtaining new ads, all members are urged to hustle.
Anyone succeeding with a new ad will be mentioned during this campaign and
remembered in the following years. Also $10 will be paid in her/his name
to the R.I.Foundation counting to your PHF. So far this year Donn and
Janet have achieved one new ad each. But
the main part of this meeting was the fellowship enjoyed and the good food
and wine brought in by the able cooks of our Club. It was only after the
mosquitoes started biting in earnest that we all broke up. Yours in Rotary, =============================================
CLUB NEWSLETTER for July 5, 2005 Attendance:
All members (except Suzanne and 3 out of our 5 new members), 9 of
our spouses, 2 junior family members, Joe Cerra and as guests Past
District Governor Ann Williams and Immediate Past Assistant District
Governor Steve Silverman and his wife Amy. We were 30 in all.
Our meeting: In his welcoming speech President Walter remembered how he intended to leave his meetings in the care of others, but as he the year progressed he came to like the hammer and took over more and more meetings himself. Looking back on a very productive year in which the Club has given away more money than ever, he thanked members for their work. He also could have boasted to have restored membership numbers, but he left that out. Then he presented awards to those he especially thanked: Bill, Ben, Judy, Janet and Bart. Assistant
Governor Janet Schmitz then greeted the Club, stressing the important role
President Walter is playing in our Club and offering him the
“Certificate of Appreciation”. She then was joined by Past Assistant
District Governor Steve Silverman to install the officers and the
President for the year 2005 – 2006. Mr. Silverman told the story of the
hummingbird who tried to douse a forest fire, who was ridiculed by the
other animals and who answered them: ”I am doing the best I can”. It
is the feeling we all get when regarding the needs in the world and what
we can do about it. Thus roused the officers were installed and following
them the President, all promising to do their best for the Club. After
that Immediate Past President Walter offered the “Ceremonial Rotary
Scarf” (made in Furthermore
we were offered a festive meal as our forefathers of 1627 would have
enjoyed had Rotary existed in those days. It was explained to us by one of
the staff of the Plimoth Plantation, who could answer all questions, as
she is publishing a cookbook of those days under the title: “Giving
Thanks”. I have eaten better in my life, but never more informed.
Considering the absence of so many of our newest members I have made a
small package of information on our Club for them, stressing the basics.
