Our Meeting:

This was a “Million $ Meal” at the home of the Nuboer’s in order to boost our Club finances. As it was a party there was a flag but no Salute to it. President Dietrich did welcome our family and said with relief that the slate of Officers for the year 2006-2007 is now complete: President Suzanne Kavanagh, Secretary Bart Nuboer, Treasurer Judy Rego, Sergeant at Arms Jim McInnes and Vice President/ President Nominee Michael Johnson. (President Elect Suzanne did promise Bart to take away all other tasks he has in the club today). Then President Dietrich reported on the ”von Trapp concert” where proceeds go to the Senior Center and Donna Green’s “Project Courage”. Robert expanded on it and said that Donna’s paintings are part of the Christmas decorations in the White House and Elisabeth von Trapp will sing a concert there tomorrow. Of course we always knew they were excellent. The fundraiser is now in full swing and we all must sell tickets: $25 for adults and $10 for children, anywhere you can! Bart responded with “Words of Wisdom” that have now become a tradition in our club and collected money for a wheelchair via “The Wheelchair Foundation”. In the meantime we all enjoyed wine and many different snacks and bites in front of the woodstove and the artificial Xmastree from China which comes lit up with many mini electric lights. Then Dennis Snyder reported on his latest medical mission to Rwanda and on the way his visits are organized. It was a facinating presentation and several of our nurses present asked themselves if they might join in one of his future trips abroad of which he does many. This time his operation worked in a small town where there was no Rotary Club. But future trips will be in places where our President may well be able to help prepare the way for a proper Rotary reception of the Medical Missions team. Rev. Robert has had real pleasure of his Rotary contacts when in Kisumu, Kenia last summer and Dennis should have the same experience next time. Finally we enjoyed the deserts of our menu and those were real great, with a.o. the largest chocolate bar I have ever seen and a cake. Otherwise it should be mentioned that the writing of this newsletter is up for grabs, as it is on the list of tasks our President Elect has promised to take away from me.

Bart.

 Our Meeting:

This was a “Million $ Meal” at the home of the McInnis’ in order to boost our Club finances. And what a great place it is! After the Salute to the Flag by Jim M., our host, and the invocation by Robert, President Dietrich welcomed our family and guests and said that Donna Nuzzo had agreed to support our effort to get High School seniors (must be older than 18 years) to do a stint on a “Mercy Ship”. Robert reported on the ”von Trapp concert” where proceeds go to the Senior Center and Donna Green’s “Project Courage”. Both Donna Green and Elisabeth von Trapp have recently become connected to the White House, Donna’s paintings being part of the Christmas decorations there. It is extraordinary how people we know suddenly become famous! Of course we always knew they were excellent, but still. The fundraiser part is now in full swing and we are all invited to help sell tickets in St. Mary’s after their services on this weekend. Please pick your best time and sit with our Catholic friends in the largest church in town and sell tickets: $25 for adults and $10 for children.

Bart reported on a letter from the President of the Shumen Club asking for certain medical equipment for a local hospital (anybody?) and computers for the school (Suzanne) and suggesting they can host youngsters from us (Dietrich’s idea) and also have an artist who is interested to show his art in the Boston area  (Candace?). So our twin in Bulgaria is coming to life to give our President another something else to worry about.

Our speaker was Mr. Craig MacDonald from Stellwagen Bank (not an ATM) Sanctuary which encompasses 842 sq. miles of ocean between Cape Ann and Cape Cod . Here a rich diversity of marine life can be found in the wide ranging habitat types present. The Sanctuary is important in protecting the area from the heavy shipping traffic entering (and leaving) Boston as well as protecting this natural gift so that we and future generations can enjoy it beauty and its research and educational benefits. This is also an area rich in sea wrecks.

Our Meeting: This is always a highlight of the Rotary year, to have residents of the Cardinal Cushing School for the annual Christmas Party. Thank you very much to Barker Tavern and the Cardinal Cushing School to help make this event possible.  I think it showed again in the faces of all there, that everybody enjoyed the party and that it was a very happy event.

Dietrich asked Bob for the invocation to start the event, then greeted all present which, aside from residents and staff of the Cardinal Cushing School , included of course the Rotarians and their spouses, of which there were quite a few, guests, who had come to help with the event, and volunteers at Barker Tavern, who helped with serving the food.

Shortly after soup had been served a fire alarm added to the events of that evening as everybody had to leave the restaurant and brace the fresh winter air until the cause for the smoke had been determined and been dealt with.

This did not dampen the Christmas spirit, as turkey dinner was served after everybody had found their seat again and then Santa Claus had his grand entrance!  Gifts for everyone from the Cardinal Cushing School !

Santa Brought a Lot of Gifts for the Cushing School Students!

After that to the dance floor where the latest styles of rhythmical interpretation of music was demonstrated in happy fashion. I hope everybody enjoyed the evening!

Everyone has fun on the dance floor . . . even the Rotarians!

Dietrich
