CLUB NEWSLETTER for October 26, 2005

Attendance: All members (except Jack, Beatrice, Suzanne, Art, Loic, Donna, Janet and Dennis: we missed you); Family of Rotary Joe Kelley, Connie Mitchell, Sandi Schipul and Carol Sladen; visiting Rotarian Lew Burridge from Ripton, Vermont, Mrs. Chris Ryan and Lutherans Eric Foote and Dave Isbrandt.

Reminder to the membership: We have a bank account collecting funds for disaster relief: The Scituate Rotary Disaster Relief Fund. Send checks to the Club (POB 831, Scituate , MA 02066 ) with the words Disaster Relief on it.

 Our Meeting:

After the Salute to the Flag by Walter and the invocation by Rev. Robert Schipul, President Dietrich welcomed our family and our 4 guests. Bill presented Mrs. Chris Ryan and gave his “Words of Wisdom” and Bart reported on the mail: a request from “Road to Responsibility” for financial help and 2 letters from the Angkor Charity: thanks for the salary of their dentist and informing us they want to expand and need money for that. President Dietrich then informed the club that our accountant has ruled that the “Pancake Breakfast” (of 2004 and 2005) can NOT be used for club expenses. This costs the club $4,463 and we need to beef up club finances. He also asked the club to vote on allocation of funds towards new projects in support of the Council on Aging assisting elders in need in Scituate . It passed unanimously. The first case is an uninsured elder needing dental work next week. He asked board members to study the proposals on the Supervisory Board and communicate comments before the board meeting so that they not delay the vote on November 1. Donn reported on the Rotary road sign on 3A near Marshfield that he will set upright. Maryann said that the Interactors will be fundraising at the Town Dump this weekend and need the Rotary aprons. The DARE sign unveiling will take place November 5 or 12. Then Bob Schipul presented his Kenya trip. He had travelled with the top of his church: Mr. Eric Foote is President and Mr. Dave Isbrandt Head Elder. Eric explained the background of the trip (70 Lutheran churches in New England supporting a district in Kenya), Bob the trip itself using a slide show to illustrate it and saying the purpose is to get the people help themselves.  Dave showed the project that came out of all of this: building a small hotel on the plot where a church and an orphanage already function. As he is an architect he showed the drawings he had made for the new building. Bob reported that he met the Rotary Club in Kisumu. We may well get involved in this project as well.

Finally and for the last time our Telephone Book fundraiser that we have now closed: we made a record gross $ 63,400 which gives us some$26,400 in profit, financing our budget! It is the third year in a row we made more than $20,000! We have 230 ads in the book. As THE key to success is getting new ads our champions of 2005 are Janet (again) with 11 and Donn & Carol Sladen with 10. Runners up are Bart with 6; Suzanne with 3; Dietrich, Bill, Judy and Ed Fox each with 2; and Candace, Walter, Jim McInnes and Robert Schipul each with 1 new ad for a total of 42. They are half the profit and compensate for the loss of some 35 ads or 15%, which is normal. Thank you all for your work, this is the best result of any fundraiser of our Club ever!

 In Rotary, Bart.

CLUB NEWSLETTER for October 19, 2005

Attendance: President Dietrich, Bill, Candace, Michael, Alden, Bart, Robert S., Donn and Ben; Family of Rotary Carol Sladen; visiting Rotarian Lew Burridge from Ripton, Vermont and Mr. Frank Tedesco, our speaker.

Reminder to the membership: We have a special bank account to collect funds for disaster relief: The Scituate Rotary Disaster Relief Fund. Please send checks to the Club (POB 831, Scituate , MA 02066 ) with the words Disaster Relief on it. This week the “Secret” in the newsletter is the name of the spouse of our Sergeant at Arms, who will surely fine all members who do not know it. So that we get some funds in from those of us who have no time for this letter. Last week’s newsletter was written by Maryann and mistakenly signed by me. I am sorry about that. Thank you Maryann for your splendid effort.

 Our Meeting:

After the Salute to the Flag by Bill and the invocation by Rev. Robert Schipul, President Dietrich welcomed our family and our 2 guests. Bill gave his “Words of Wisdom” and Bart did not report on the mail as his plane came in late from Baltimore . Rev. Robert Schipul then reported on the visit of a small group of senior Russian health care officials to our District October 29 through November 6. Lodging is arranged and Wednesday November 2 the group will be here. Apart from our Senior Center they will also visit Lutheran Social Services facilities in

Brockton . President Dietrich announced that we will send money to a Rotary District in Pakistan hurt by the recent earthquake. He also said that we have paid $250 for Club membership of the South Shore Arts Center , paid for by the Club. Candace explained the privileges that gives to all of our members. President Dietrich sees this as part of our Literacy program which includes the visual arts. Then he mentioned that the Cohasset Club has agreed to assist our Angkor effort with $1,000 for which we are very grateful. This is the first thing we do together. Also, the Rotary roadsign on 3A near Marshfield has fallen over into the bush and has to be set up again. Donn was volunteered to take care of it.

Mr. Frank Tedesco then gave a fascinating history of his experiences as a pilot of a B-24 based in Italy in 1944-45 bombing the Ploesti oil felds in Roumania and factories in Vienna . He illustrated it with many historic pictures.

Finally our Telephone Book fundraiser: we made a record $26k so far, financing most of our budget! We have 228 ads in, same as 2004 and 4 more than last year. As THE key to success is getting new ads our champions are Janet with 11 and Donn & Carol Sladen with 10 new ads. Runners up are Bart with 6; Suzanne with 3; Dietrich, Judy and Bill each with 2; and Candace, Walter, Jim M., Robert S. and Ed Fox each with 1 new ad for a total of 41, much beter than last year’s 29 but less than the 54 of the 2004 book. It compensates for the loss of some 35 ads or 15%, which is normal. Thank you all for your work! One ad is from out of State, a first ever I think! It came in thanks to our newsletter. We are now winding this fundraiser down but ads are still coming in. And I want to announce that next year someone else should do the administration, which is quite some work and must be precise

In Rotary,

Bart

CLUB NEWSLETTER for October 12, 2005

Attendance: All Members (except Jack, Jim B., Candace, Karen, Art, Jim M., Loic, Donna, Bob P. and Dennis: we missed you!); Family of Rotary Connie Mitchell and Carol Sladen; visiting Rotarian Lew Burridge from Ripton, Vermont and Mrs. Razia Jan, President of the Duxbury Rotary Club.

Reminder to the membership: We have a special bank account to collect funds for disaster relief: The Scituate Rotary Disaster Relief Fund. Please send checks to the Club ( P O Box 831 , Scituate , MA 02066 ) with the words Disaster Relief on it. This week the “Secret” in the newsletter is the year of the incorporation of our Club: 1969.

Our Meeting:After the salute to the flag by Bill and the invocation by Beatrice, President Dietrich welcomed our family and our guests, especially Mrs. Jan. Bill gave his “Words of Wisdom” and Bart reported on the mail: a call of Dave Willis, President of the Randolph Rotary Club, saying that their motorbike raffle had earned the club $7,000 and that one of the minor prizes ($200) was won by our member, Jim McInnes; a letter from the Italian musician Francesco Attesti that he hopes to play for us in March (he charges $,1000 for a concert); and he repeated the request to sponsor “Shelter Boxes” as they have sent 800 unsponsored boxes to Louisiana (one box costs $1,000). A reminder that the “Sock Hop”for Donna Green on November 5th is  at 7.30 pm in the Riverclub. Then President Dietrich reiterated the recent board meeting regarding the change from committees to having teams. The rationale is that committees discuss and meet then meet and discuss. However teams have a more hands on approach that makes things happen. On a team the committee interacts in order to work toward a goal. Additionally, communication will become even more important as we grow: we had 14 members now we have 24 and we are moving toward 30 members. Communication makes sure that everyone feels included, everyone can contribute and the more we all contribute the better it will make the club. As things happen and updates need to occur I will stay in contact with you by way of e-mail. Our website is interactive so check it out in order to see what is happening. Ideally each committee will have its own website. Contact either Walter Heller or Sue Cellucci for help putting information on the individual websites. **the Oct. 19th meeting is at Pier 44**

Walter Heller shared an invitation to the South Shore Council of Rotary Clubs on October 19th at 6pm at Reggios on 1037 Main St in S. Weymouth . The popular speaker Mark Linde will speak on the topic of our public image. Mr. Linde, a gifted speaker is known to to bring a crowd both laughter and tears.

Did you notice an entire page devoted to the Rotary Club and to Interact in this week’s Mariner? It was an inspiring article with an amusing error, see if you can guess what it is. Thank you from the Interact Club to the excellent photographer!

Suzanne announced her success with her request for the donations of computers by using our e-mail contacts to make the request. The shelter in Marshfield will certainly be grateful for everyone donations and group efforts.

Our guest speaker, Mrs. Razia Jan of the Duxbury Rotary Club shared with us her recent successful fundraiser: An Evening With Khaled Hosseini. The fund raiser took place on 9/25/05 at the Duxbury Performing Arts Center. Thus far over $ 49,000.00 has been raised for the first free library for women in Kabul . Mrs. Jan also brought with her a signed copy of the book Kite Runner for Mrs. Kelley who recently lost her son to the political struggle in Afghanistan . As you may recall the Scituate Rotary Club, August 23, 2005 gave the first of its donations in the amount of $500.00 to Rotary projects to help those in need rebuild after either civil strife or natural disaster.

Finally some words about our Telephone Book fundraiser which finances nearly everything we give away through our projects: we made $23.3k so far which is close to the result of the past 2 years and a record when you look further back.  As THE key to success is getting new ads our champions are Janet with 10 new ads and Donn & Carol Sladen with 9. Runners up are Bart with 5; Suzanne with 3; Judy and Bill each with 2; and Candace, Walter, Jim M. and Dietrich each with 1 new ad.  We have begun the process of winding this fundraiser down, but it is still possible to get new ads in! Also, 14 advertisers of last year have not yet renewed and are being called.

Please send  checks to the Club (POB 831, Scituate , MA 02066 ) with the words Disaster Relief on it. This week the “Secret” in the newsletter is the name of the spouse of our Club President:

Our Meeting:

This turned out to be the largest, the most important and the best prepared meeting of this Club in my time in Rotary. Thank you very much Maryann to trigger all of this! And thank you President Dietrich and Suzanne to make it happen! This Club has become quite amazing to me: Membership up from 14 to 24 and activities happening everywhere you look: Interact Club, Fundraiser in the Village Marketplace for the Senior Center (have you seen the store recently with all windows plastered with Rotary posters? Initiative of Jim McInnes); another fundraiser, a concert by Elizabeth von Trapp, coming in January initiated by Bob S. for Donna Green and also for the Senior Center; Dennis came to us with his “Missions for Children” and our new Program Chair Michael has our calendar stuffed into December. And we also did our Pancake Breakfast and are doing our Telephone Book fundraiser of course, that is tradition and going very well too! The club’s energy has it bursting at the seams and all of this is just wonderful to behold!

After the Salute to the Flag by District Governor Paul Welch, Bart used for the invocation Franciscus of Assisi’s prayer from a pamphlet he had received at Jared FitzGerald’s funeral 2 years ago. This teacher and nearly - President of our Club was thereby a little bit present in this meeting, which he would have enjoyed even more than most of us. President Dietrich welcomed our family and our guests, especially all Interactors. Bill gave his “Words of Wisdom” and Bart reported on the mail: a thank you letter from the Governor of the Texas District that we supported with $500 from our Disaster Relief Fund; a letter from Mr. Dimitrov, President of the Shoumen Club in Bulgaria informing us that he is preparing a project to be done together with us; a request to sponsor “Shelter Boxes” as they have sent 800 unsponsored boxes to Louisiana (one box costs $1,000); and a letter from the combined Rotary Clubs of Leiden, The Netherlands offering their nicely illustrated book commemorating the 225th anniversary of US President John Adams’ arrival in The Netherlands. We have ordered this book. Then President Dietrich started the

Inaugural Ceremony of our new Interact Club at Scituate High School

by explaining the “Four Way Test of all the things we think, say and do” to all. He used the story of the butterfly, whose wings can create the turbulence that in exceptional circumstances can become stronger and stronger until they become of hurricane force and terrify everybody. He stressed the high standard all Rotarians are held to and then introduced Suzanne as our advisor to the new Interact Club. Suzanne in her speech then explained that the butterfly in this case was the ad our Past President Walter decided he wanted in the newspaper to explain our club to a wider audience. Everybody was against this idea, but he was President and therefore he just did it anyway. As a result Maryann showed up in our meeting and saying she was a teacher found out that for years we had thought about, wanted and hoped for an Interact Club in the High School. Her reaction: ”I can help you with that!” And ever after when she joined our meetings she came with guests, often more than one and mostly youngsters. This time she brought 14 with her and the restaurant had to move us to their largest room and we needed the assistance of our District Governor to help us out. Not bad for a brand new member! Then Suzanne explained how the Interact Club fits in our Rotary Family and mentioned the plans the new Interactors already have discussed: They have spoken about collecting computers for disabled children, work in soup kitchens, planned walks and other fundraisers.  We will all be watching with keen interest. Suzanne was followed by our District Governor Mr. Paul Welch, who told the youngsters that from now on they will be part of Rotary with all responsibilities and privileges that it entails. He then proceeded to induct every charter member of the Interact Club at Scituate High School . All were pinned, some by our Assistant Governor Janet, some by the District Interact Chair Kris David, some by Suzanne and some by their respective parents. After the members were done,  the Board was inducted: Austin Crumpton, President; William Grace Vice President and President Elect; James Smith Secretary and Kerry Sorenson Treasurer. Suzanne welcomed all new Interact Charter Members and  the cake was ceremoniously cut by the new Board.

Afterwards President Dietrich said his “Closing Words”, a speech of substance which you can read in our website Scituaterotary.org. Please visit, it is worth reading it. Which he ended quoting a gravestone of men that came from Kent to Scituate where it is written: “He taught as a learner, he lead as a follower and set the feet of many upon the path of life”. BE WELCOME, INTERACTORS!

Finally some words about our Telephone Book fundraiser which is the bread and butter of this club, financing nearly everything we give away through our projects: we made $21k so far which is close to the result of the past 2 years and a record when you look further back. And we are not yet done. As THE key to success is getting new ads our champions are Janet with 10 new ads and Donn & Carol Sladen with 8. Runners up are Suzanne and Bart each with 4; Judy and Bill each with 2; and Candace, Walter, Jim M. and Dietrich each with 1 new ad.  We have begun the process of winding this fundraiser down, but it is still possible to get new ads in! Also, 25 advertisers of last year have not yet renewed and are being called.

My iron rule to keep this newsletter limited to ONE page and one page only was impossible to keep this week. Apparently, this newsletter is bursting at the seams too.

In Rotary,
Bart.

President Dietrich's Closing Words after the Inauguration of the Interact Club at Scituate High School

Now we have an Interact Club!

I would like to congratulate all of you to membership of the Interact Club at Scituate High School

We are looking forward to working with you, to have a partnership between the Rotary Club of Scituate and the Interact Club of Scituate

When I was your age, it was roughly in the late 60s

You will have heard that this was a time of rearrangement of relations between an established and an emerging generation.

Today one speaks of the 60s revolution

It was a time when under the beginning stress of the information revolution old ways were questioned by a new generation. It was a time when a butterfly had flipped its wing and an emerging windstorm changed the climate, the way young and old interacted. It brought changes in values.

Positively, it also brought a dialogue between the generations.

We are looking forward to working with you, as you take on responsibilities in this town and in this world. We are looking forward to have and to continue a dialogue with you, as you define your programs and purpose.

For us here in Scituate we can invoke the insight from people that are part of the town’s history, the men that came from Kent . Let us follow the example of a schoolmaster of the village of Sandwich in Kent , who lived around the time the men of Kent came here. From him we might find guidance of how generations should work together. The plaque on his grave reads:

 HE TAUGHT AS A LEARNER

HE LEAD AS A FOLLOWER

AND SET THE FEET OF MANY

UPON THE PATH OF LIFE

We are looking forward to a rewarding journey together.
