Speaker: Janet Nuboer

After the Pledge to the flag and the Invocation, President Dietrich welcomed all present at the meeting.

Bart Nuboer informed us that we had received a letter of thanks from the Senior Center for our donation of three thousand dollars to the institution.  He reminded us that the Art Festival in Cohasset will be June 16, 17, 18, and that we are sponsoring the kids tent.  He also asked Jim McInnis to come forward to receive The Paul Harris Award in recognition of his efforts to help others.

Jim McInnis talked about the upcoming Ross Antique Auction that will be held at the Scituate Country Club. He said it is bound to be a success, and besides ,lots of fun. We do have to sell 10 tickets each and maybe a door raffle.

Janet gave us a quiz on what the Rotary Foundation is and how it works.  The question and answer quiz went well as long as people knew the answer. Some responded well, many guessed the answers, and others were too timid to participate. Some of us had looked up the information and prepared, some of us hadn’t. Congratulations to Bob Schipul and Dietrich who ended up with the most correct answers. For those who would like to catch up, it is all under Rotary Foundation on Rotary’s web site www.rotary.org

Regards,
Beatrice

President Dietrich informed us that we have received a letter from Mr. Benjamin L. Lawrence in which he states that the city of Shoumen in Bulgaria is eager to start the student exchange program as soon as possible for there several Rotarian families that want to open their home to the students. Therefore we should respond soon.

Walter Heller said that we are going to distribute 2000 American flags at the Memorial Day Parade, and that those interested in helping must meet at the SHS at 9:30 AM. Parade will begin at 10:30AM

Janet Nuboer informed us of the Brockton Rox Baseball Game to be held on June 23. It could be fun to go as a group. Tickets are $20.00 each, and includes "all you can eat" barbecue.

Rev Robert Schipul introduced Bishop Obare and invited him to share some of his thoughts of Kenya with us.

He told us he is married and is blessed with ten children, five boys and five girls. He went on to describe his country, two thirds of which is dry, and only one third is arable. Eighty per cent live below the poverty line, therefore poverty is a big challenge for them. Malaria is the most serious illness, followed by Aids and typhoid fever. Some people will boil their drinking water, others will not. Water, clean water is a very precious and rare commodity and this is where they need help. As he said," food is not a problem, we need financial help to dig wells to find water, for water is life".

Amanda Swanson is going to Kenya for two weeks on a research project to study the topography of the rivers in a certain area and collect samples of water for analysis.

The remaining four students that came to hear Bishop Obare are candidates that will be going to the White Water Seminar, held every year at the University of Wisconsin, in White Water, Wisconsin. Every year, thousands of students from all over th USA and from several different countries meet at the White Water Seminar and listen to excellent speakers. According to some who have attended this seminar, they describe it as "a life changing experience".

Regards, Beatrice

Suzanne Kavanaugh gave us an update on the Mercy Ship Programs.

Scholarship awards for graduation students was discussed, and it was agreed that the awards would be presented to the students at Alden and Connie's home as has been done in the past. This gives us a chance to meet the students and get to know them better.

The speaker for tonight was Jim Lucas, President of the Brockton Rox Baseball Team. For those that were not here you missed hearing a very good speaker who shared some of his experience as a broadcaster in baseball.  He ended his presentation by saying..." after being in baseball for 16 years, baseball for him is watching families enjoy a game...seeing families hug each other, celebrating together a happy moment...is worth it".

We will have our official meeting from 6:30PM to 7:30PM , including meal. The program then will open up to include guests beyond Rotarians with refreshments, to listen to a presentation including the clean water projects (in which we have begun to be  involved as the Rotary Club) and medical needs in Kenya and then allow time for Q&A and visiting with the good Bishop. Bob and Eric ask you to join us in making Bishop Obare as welcome in New England as he has made them feel in Africa last year.

Attendance: Beatrice is still in MD, Eric was stuck in Boston , Loic still in China , Bob Price, Jim Blanchard,Mary and Maryann were missed, and Bill, where were you?! Christine is hidding from me, no doubt. Anyway, we were only 17 paying for 20 dinners…By the way, we missed you, Lisa?

The meeting: It was club night and the SAR was busy collecting birthday fines from January 1st. Bob S., Candace and Walter paid up. Alden had paid his willingly on the occasion! He, of course, has had more experience with this. HBSB were generous, helping to defray the cost of the missing meals. President Elect, Suzanne had us fill in 2 forms before we could eat. One allowed us to speak our mind and thus volunteer to make things better. The other set us up for all sorts of fines. But it will be useful to have addresses and phone numbers for our newest members.

After dinner business included more by-law-hubba (SRF trustees will be named by the BOD, not elected) and a lecture on notifying Judy of intended absences or paying up!!! No options.

Cheers for a great weekend in beautiful downtown Plymouth .  Janet
