September 20, 2006

At this meeting, President Elect, Mike Johnson presided. Pledge of led by Walter heller. The Invocation was given by Diertich Bilger in a very unique way. He read a poem relating to, justice, love, and action, linking together Jewish, Greek, Roman and Arab traditions.

Bart , and another letter from the Wheelchair Foundation, which we support by donating these to someone in need.

Mike Johnson shared with us what he learned by attending a lecture in Boston this past week. For example, that 600 people die daily in South Africa from various diseases, especially Aids.  It  is sad to know that so many die, especially innocent children, whose pregnant mothers pass on the Aid virus to them, and the sad part is that this is preventable. If treatment is given to the mother, the children will not get the virus. He suggested that Rotary look into how we can help in this area.

On the subject of the Scituate Rotary Phone Book, KathyMcDonald, asistant to Ed Fox, instructed us on how to fill out the ad contracts properly using a black or blue pen, not a red pen ,for that color is used by them for their own notes.

There were also several ideas given regarding the ideal theme for the Phone Book cover.

Patrick Leonard, teacher, counselor, and excellent speaker, made our evening memorable, I wish you had been there.  With a warm, personal style, in half an hour, Patrick gave us a summary of the History of Rotary. I personally congratulated him for giving us a wealth of information in such a short time, something not many people can do.  His passion for Rotary, and the importance of preserving a legacy was very clear.  He began by saying that Paul Harris, a lawyer in Chicago , founded the Rotary Club on February 3, l905 as a means to meet people, and get to know them. Soon after, its goal was to provide unselfish service to the community. It began as a men's club, but ladies were invited now and then as guests .By 1909 it went from Chicago ,  to Boston ,to San francisco , to New York , and back to Boston where they held their first Rotary Convention in 1910. From the humble beginnings of a little group of 8 men in Chicago , it grew into an inmense global group. " Service above Self " is the motto for Rotary everywhere. To this day , the Rotary Club of Chicago, is known as "The Father of Service Clubs".

With Regards to all,

 Speaker, Ed Fox

The new President of Scituate Rotary Club for the year 2007, Suzanne  Kavanagh, welcomed everyone to the meeting, and presented two speakers: Chris Ryan and Ed Fox.

The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag led by Joseph Kelley, followed by the Invocation said by the previous President of Scituate Rotary, Dietrich Bilger.

First to speak was Chris Ryan, whose expertise is in Real Estate, and who has volunteered to take on the project of The Scituate Rotary Phone Book, which is our main fundraiser. Chris Ryan spoke well. She comes across as a good organizer, and with good work ethic....For those who may feel overwhelmed, she asked " Do you know how to eat an elephant?........one step at a time."  So she wants us to take one step at a time, and above all she wants to make this project go" smoothly, fast and fun."  Next week we will start work on the Scituate Phone Book.

The next person to speak was Ed Fox, an art designer, who has a lot of knowledge and experience, forming and creating the Scituate  Rotary Phone Book . He shared with us some of the process involved in  making the phone book, which was very interesting. One can not but appreciate the finished product, when you take into account all the work it takes to produce the phone book.

Bart Nuboer also spoke and said that the key to success, on this project, is to bring in new ads, and that his wife Janet, has been the one who has brought in the most new ads, for the last three years.  He also suggested that we put in the news letter every week the names of those who bring in new ads.

He also said that he sent the District Newsletter to all, and that the District Address book is available to whomever wants one. This address book has a list of all the important people in the District, besides the names of those on Committees for this year.

Since 2003 we have been covering the salary for a dentist in a hospital in Cambodia. The salary has increased and suggests we have an ongoing collection among us for this dentist.

For the coming year we have made a commitment with Dr. Dennis Snyder to help where we can his humanitarian, medical  outreach program..........and the Project for Clean Water in Kenya, led by Rev. Robert Schipul.

  Regards,   Beatrice
