Salute to the flag was lead by Bill Coulter and the invocation was said by Rev. Robert Schipul.

Dietrich welcomed everyone and said that a $1,000 dollar check from President Brad Goodwin of Cohasset Rotary Club was received as a donation for our commitment to helping the Angkor Children’s Hospital in Cambodia . He has expressed his heartfelt thanks for this generous donation.

We continue to support Pure Water for the World project, which is basically focused on Middle America . Approximately 26,000 children die yearly from drinking contaminated water. Rotary provides water filters to a town in Honduras and the vision is to expand this project to all of Central America .

Walter Heller said there are two new Rotary signs on Route 3A indicating where we have our weekly meetings.

Candice Cramer announced there will be an art exhibit at the Cohasset Art Center from February 24th through April 2nd called Celtic Odyssey, depicting Irish landscapes. Also on March 11, 2006 , there will be an “Irish Pub Dance” at 7:30 PM. Members $40.00 and non-members $50.00. RSVP by March 6th by calling 781-383-2787.

Suzanne Kavanagh informed us that most Scituate Phone Books have been distributed.

The Film Festival presenting films on conflict resolution and peace is on track for March 25th and 26th

Remember that on April 5, 2006 there will be a joint dinner with the Scituate Chamber of Commerce at the Scituate Country Club. Please keep this date open.

Carol Sladen informed us that the Scituate Federal Savings Bank gave $2,000 to the Animal Shelter.

It was good to see Bart and Janet return safely from their trip to Jerusalem . This was the third visit for Bart and the first for Janet. They gave us a wonderful presentation of their trip and experiences in Israel . Both agreed that it is a lovely country with very welcoming people. They visited the temple wall and left prayers given to them by friends for that purpose. While there they saw a sign that read, “This is a holy place for everyone.”

Bart summed it up by saying “It was a fantastic trip and I highly recommend it.”

CLUB NEWSLETTER for February 8, 2006

Dinner was held at the Scituate Country club at 6:30 PM . In attendance: all except Bart and Janet Nuboer who were on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Michael Johnson who is in California, Jack Borror and Alden Mitchell who is getting better everyday under Connie’s TLC.

Dietrich Bilger, our President asked Alvin L Burridge to lead the pledge to the flag. The invocation was said by Rev. Robert Schipul of Christ Lutheran Church in Scituate .

Our guests tonight were: Mr. Brad Goodwin, President of Cohasset Rotary Club; Alvin Lewis Burridge of Vermont ; Sandy Schipul; our speaker Jinda Mulvey and Susan Bazanoski.

Bill Coulter gave us some words of wisdom with a story that stresses the fact that a kind act will produce good results in some one else’s life – So make a difference with an act of kindness.

Dietrich greeted our guests and made a few announcements:

1.       Lottery tickets for pure water for the world at a dollar each were given to club members. Each member bought a booklet of 12 tickets as a contribution.

2.       Next week’s lunch meeting will be cancelled and speaker will be rescheduled.

3.       Be aware of an upcoming project at the initiative of Michael Johnson and Walter Heller who met with a professor in Boston to discuss films of conflict resolution and world peace. We planed to have a film festival, possibly at the High School in March or April on this subject.

4.       Jim McGinnis talked with Claudia Oliver recently about getting together with the Chamber of Commerce members who meet once a month and invite them to have dinner with us. This would be a good way to introduce ourselves and to get to know them. While the focus of the Chamber of Commerce may be local businesses and the focus of Rotary is “Service Above Self”, at the local and international levels our love for our community is the same.

Our Speaker tonight is Jinda Mulvey, who presented us with her program on Kid Power Safety Skills, which teaches people of all ages how to stay safe. She just started a Kid Power program which uses some Tae Kwon

Do marshal arts skills. Jinda also demonstrated some techniques and strategies on how to be safe by: being centered (focused on your surroundings) being aware, taking charge and getting help. She stressed four rules of boundaries:

1.       “I belong to myself and you belong to yourself”

2.       “Some things are not a choice” (Involves respect)

3.       Nothing that saddens you or hurts you is to be kept a secret.

4.       “Tell anyone and everyone until you get help.”

Susan Bazanoski, who was principal of a Middle School in Conn. spoke highly of the Kid Power Program for it enables children to deal effectively against abusive behavior from adults and definitely increases their self esteem by believing in themselves.

Sincerely,

Beatrice Hurwitch

 Our Meeting:

Our fifth meeting in the new venue and we had nice weather for a change. President Dietrich asked Bob Price to do the Pledge of Allegiance (his first) and he did the Invocation himself, a most impressive prayer. Bill had funny Words of Wisdom on wise elderly folk and then President Dietrich installed Mary Jenkins, sponsored by Maryann, as our 26th member! He has doubled the size of our Club in his year! Welcome, Mary! Happy bucks filled the “Fine Stein” to overflowing and President Dietrich announced that this newsletter will be Bart’s swansong! Thank you very much, President Dietrich! Maryann reported on the DARE Graduation, where she not only was asked to sit on the podium with dignitaries like Senator Hedlund, but also had to make a speech! She presented Officer Dom with our annual contribution of $2,000. (Mary Jenkins was there as well). The members gave her an applause for her effort. Then President Dietrich asked for a motion on the logistics problem which reads as follows: we will all pay on the 1st  meeting of the month for all meals that month and when one cannot make a meeting, must inform Judy by Sunday for a credit to be used the next month. No call, no reimbursement. We start today and do this forever. The motion carried unanimously. Then he asked members to authorize that the funds collected in the last 2 fundraisers be released to the Senior Center and Donna Green. This motion also carried unopposed. Council on Aging Director Mrs. Joan Wright (February 15) and Donna Green (March 15) will be invited by Michael, Jim M. will arrange for the newspapers. Then an effort by most members ensued to force President Dietrich to stop the lunch meetings altogether, but it failed to impress him. We will all have to do better next time. As to the Food Pantry, which has to move house in June, it was decided that we can best support them around Christmas, like we did this year. Then the two Membership Committees were asked to report: for the Marshfield one, Bob Price said he has 2 in focus and for the Scituate Committee Suzanne could suffice to sit pretty with her 2 guests. President Dietrich said again that changing our name to “North River Rotary Club” would be helpful, but left it on the plate of his successor Suzanne to implement. This was first proposed by Walter during his first Presidency 2001-2002! Christine proposed to look at the membership lists of the Chambers of Commerce and suggested a joint meeting with them. Finally Maryann informed the Club that our Interactors have secured the Recycling Bay in our Town Dump for the month of March and hope to make that a good fundraiser. It could make thousands of dollars. Finally, may I thank readers for their kind words of appreciation during my editorship.

In Rotary,

Bart
