Project “Shoe Fly” of the Duxbury Club needs to send boxes of children’s shoes for our Military in Afghanistan to give out to the locals there. It takes $20 to send a box of 55 pairs. Janet is collecting, it is one of “her” clubs.

Our Meeting:

Our fourth meeting in the new venue and we all had to fight hail and freezing rain. President Dietrich asked Michael to do the Pledge of Allegiance and Beatrice for the Invocation. He informed the members that Suzanne had to leave for New York where her mother suddenly was hospitalized. Maryanne took her place at the DARE graduation, taking her friend Mary Jenkins with her. She will also hand our annual contribution to Officer Dom there. The WoW was done by Ben, an excellent prayer for wisdom. President Dietrich contributed to the discussion on the Telephone Book by stating that we will send a letter to advertisers thanking them (and apologising for the lateness of the publication). And he decided the logistics problem as follows: we will all pay on the 1st  meeting of the month for all meals that month and when one cannot make it, must inform Judy by Monday for a credit to be used the next month. We start February 1. Ben read a newspaper article saying that  Polio is only left in 4 countries today: India , Pakistan , Afghanistan and Nigeria . Bart reported on the mail: a thank you letter from von Trapp Music, stating that they had enjoyed the concert very much and would like to return to us! Our von Trapp Concert, our 4th fundraiser of this year, shows a net result of $6,410! (the final number?). Janet did her “Rotary Foundation Minute” saying that our Club contributes a lot to the Rotary Foundation. And President Dietrich urged all of us to look for and invite potential members, as the concert has given the Club a boost in visibility in Scituate . Then to the delight of this reporter an effort ensued to change editor.                                 Mr. Wayne Ross talked about his life, first as an athlete, then as a quadriplegic. He said that he had spoken to our Club 8 years ago, but Donn was the only one present then. He had done many sports, but had excelled in bicycling. In fact he has biked from Seattle to Boston , from Montreal to Florida , around the island of Sicily , from Wick , Scotland to the Isle of Wight and from Normandie to Lorraine (twice), saying that the best place in the world for bicycling is Holland . There all roads and even tunnels have also a bike path and a pedestrian path and you can really fly safely on the bike paths. Then in 1996 he went to do a bicycle trip from Northern Alaska to Terra del Fuego, 16,000 miles. With a friend in order to get into the Guinness Book of Records. Halfway during that trip he had his accident breaking his neck and ever since he is in a wheelchair. His friend completed the trip and both are mentioned in the Guinness Book! Now as a quadiplegic he competes in several sports again. He also spoke highly of the Veterans Administration and the way it has looked after him. Our Club felt honored to have had Wayne and his father as our guests.

In Rotary,

Bart.

CLUB NEWSLETTER for January 18, 2006

Attendance: President Elect Suzanne (presiding), Bill, Candace, Walter, Jim M., Bart, Donna, Bob P., Janet, Donn and Ben; Family of Rotary Carol Sladen; and guests Lewis Burridge from Ripton, Vermont, Donna Green and our speaker Herbert Rosen. We were 15 in all, which is great for lunch. But Janet had called all and sundry to attend. President Dietrich may decide to end this experiment.

Message to members: Alden Mitchell has returned home and is receiving visitors.

Reminder: The Scituate Rotary Disaster Relief Fund accepts checks and cash: POB 831, Scituate , MA 02066 . Project “Shoe Fly” of the Duxbury Club needs to send boxes of children’s shoes for our Military in Afghanistan to give out to the locals there. It takes $20 to send a box of 55 pairs. Janet is collecting for them, it is one of  her” clubs.

 Our Meeting:

For our third meeting in the new venue we all had to fight record winds blowing over the marsh, making me worry over the strength of the windows. President Elect Suzanne took the opportunity to do the Pledge of Allegiance all by herself (she must like that a lot, Dietrich please note) and Bill did the Invocation on the fly: an unexpected request. There was no WoW, but instead we had a long discussion on the Telephone Book, now at the printer’s at last: Should we add the envelopes asking for a donation? Several old timers were against it, as it takes all members to do a day of dreary work and it gives only some $500 net. We also need a proper venue and therefore it was good that Donna was present: she gave the dates we could get the school’s assistance. Jim presented the case in favor and Suzanne stopped the endless discussion by volunteering President Dietrich to decide this. Bart then reported on the mail: a thank you letter from the Wheelchair Foundation for our one chair of Christmas and the 2 books on “John Adams in Leyden” (where this 2nd US President went in order to learn how a republic works) that we bought via the Leiden Rotary Club. They went on loan to Donna and Candace. And he said that our von Trapp Concert, our 4th fundraiser of this year, shows a net result of $6,360! (the final number).

Then Mr. Herbert Rosen introduced himself and had a wealth of advice on money matters. He stressed that each one of us should go through all of our insurances and trusts every 3 years, as life’s situations change all the time. In the new venue we have a logistics problem: we must inform our host in advance how many will be eating. There are several solutions: 1. We guess and then we either pay more than we can afford, or we starve. This is what we do now. 2. We charge all members for the meal except when they inform Judy that they are NOT coming. Then we most likely always feast. 3. We charge all members per quarter for all meals, whether they eat it or not. This is another problem for our President to decide upon his return. And there are the “signs”.

Finally: The Memorial Service for Nico Scholtens of the Rotary club Den Haag, Holland in our Lutheran Church last Friday that was announced in the last newsletter was attended by his daughter Martine with husband and her 3 children, by several friends and by four of our members.

Project “Shoe Fly” of the Duxbury Club needs to send boxes of children’s shoes for our Military in Afghanistan to deliver there. It takes $20 to send a box of 55 pairs. We helped send 7 boxes so far. Give it to Janet please!

Our Meeting:

Our first meeting in the new venue made us all most pleased! The Scituate Country Club gives us a large room all for ourselves: this is space for a 100 member Club and therefore should do for our President Dietrich’s wildest dreams. Maureen welcomed us and explained where everything was. Then President Dietrich asked Jim McInnis to do the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag (as he has arranged this change of venue for us) and Robert for the Invocation. He suggested members visit Alden, then he read the letter from Mr. Dimitrov of the Shumen Club. Several ways of cooperation are mentioned there and a “Shumen Team” was formed on the spot: Candace and Jack for the art, Janet for the medical, Maryann and the Interactors for the exchange part and President Dietrich to keep it all together.

During the “Happy Bucks” Michael reported on having been attaked by a hooded hoodlum with a knife; and he advised all of us to always have two $100 bills in your pocket, as it makes such an experience much more enjoyable.

Then Robert reported on our Concert which takes place this Sunday in St. Mary’s at 3 pm . This is our 4th fundraiser this year. President Dietrich informed us that the Club had bought 2 tickets for each member and that Judy was ready to receive the $50 payment. Of course we all must sell tickets: $25 for adults and $10 for children, anywhere we can! Robert said that 2/3 of the costs has been covered by ads in the program and the remaining 1/3 is already in via ticket sales. Every ticket sold from now on goes to the 2 causes: the Scituate Senior Center and Donna Green’s “Project Courage”. Both will be introduced during the intermission. He told all Rotarians to dress in black and white, as we will light the candles at the start of the concert! President Dietrich then invited all members for an “afterglow party” in his apartment at 1 Mill Wharf # 34. Finally Robert said that we will do this next year again and that he hopes Elisabeth von Trapp returns the first week of December 2006. The organization should be helped by the names of attendees which we are now collecting.

Finally President Dietrich presented 10 members with citations and plaques as thanks for special services rendered to the Club during his first half year: Maryann, Candace, Walter, Jim McInnis, Michael, Bart, Judy, Robert, Janet and Donn/Carol.
