ROTARY NEWSLETTER
ROTARY NEWSLETTER: JUNE 20, 2007
IN ATTENDANCE: Lew Burridge, Candace Cramer, Bill Coulter, Walter Heller, Beatrice Hurwich, Suzanne Kavanagh, Karen Kelley, Loic Metson, Jim McInnes, Donna Nuzzo, Sandi Schipul, Bob Schipul, Ben Summers
GUESTS: Virginia Lima, William Clark
Our luncheon meeting marked a milestone in the year as Suzanne rang the opening bell for the last time as our President.
Mrs. Virginia Lima, a guest of Donna Nuzzo, and a Spanish teacher at SHS, spoke to us about becoming involved in a cultural exchange through the Rotary Youth Exchange. She would like to host Lucia Morillo Saenz de Santa Maria for the school year with the help of both the Rotary and the Scituate High School . The high school would assume financial responsibility and the Lima family will provide housing. Virginia invited our club to look into Lucia’s sponsorship through the Rotary Youth Exchange Club. The Superintendent of Schools, Mark Matson will accept Lucia at SHS as long as she is sponsored by the local Rotary Club. In return, Lucia will be invited to attend Rotary activities offered by ESSEX, (Eastern States Student Exchange).
It was agreed that our club would be glad to look into the provisions of this request and contact the Chairperson of the Rotary Youth Exchange.
It was fitting to bring out a Birthday Cake and sing “Happy Birthday” to Lew Burridge. It was a memorable occasion and we won’t divulge just how many years he was celebrating, but he did donate $8.70! Also to be noted, Lew joined the Rotary Club in Tsingtao , China in 1947. What a remarkable club milestone for Lew!
As her last official duty, Suzanne gave all members present a copy of the 2006-07 Foundation Fundraisers and then a list of the new 2007-08 projects for funding approval.
Carolina Hill Literacy, Project Kenya , and Habitat for Humanity were passed as presented and the Water Conservation Outreach will be brought back for approval after more information.
The full input of all of our members was missed, but some were excused due to travel or vacations. However all of the members of this club wish to express their gratitude to Suzanne for her year of “Service Above Self” and for inspiring all of us to new heights in activities and experiences through exposure to stargazing, ballroom dancing, weather forecasting.
Thank you Suzanne for setting our goals even higher and bringing us the opportunity to host the new projects presented today.

Kavanagh's Speech from 6/13/07 Meeting:
A Brief History of Rotary:
Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth started a professional club. The name "Rotary" derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. This was in 1905.
Today, 1.2 million Rotarians belong to some 32,000 Rotary clubs. Approximately 12% are women, first admitted in 1989.
As Rotary grew, its mission expanded beyond serving the professional and social interests of club members. Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need. The organization's dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its principal motto: Service Above Self. Rotary also later embraced a code of ethics, called The 4-Way Test, which has been translated into hundreds of languages.
About The Rotary Foundation
The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.
In 1917, Arch C. Klumph, Rotary's sixth president, proposed to the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, the creation of an "endowment fund for Rotary . . . for the purpose of doing good in the world in charitable, educational, and other avenues of community service." A few months later, the endowment received its first contribution of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, USA.
In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000, the fund was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International. Five Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to "hold, invest, manage, and administer all of its property. . . as a single trust, for the furtherance of the purposes of RI."
Two years later, the Foundation made its first grant of US$500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The ISCC — created by Rotarian Edgar F. "Daddy" Allen — later grew into the Easter Seals organization.
The Great Depression and World War II both impeded significant growth for the Foundation, but the need for promoting a lasting world peace generated great post-war interest in developing the Foundation.
After Rotary founder Paul P. Harris died in 1947, contributions began pouring into Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created for the purpose of building the Foundation.
That same year, the first Foundation program — the forerunner of the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships program — was established. Then in 1965-66, three new programs were launched — Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants.
The Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) program was launched in 1978, with the Rotary Volunteers program being created as a part of 3-H in 1980. The PolioPlus program was announced in 1984-85, and the following year saw the introduction of Rotary Grants for University Teachers. The first Peace Forums were held in 1987-88, leading to the establishment of Rotary Peace Programs. Then in 1989, 1963-64 RI President Carl P. Miller and his wife, Ruth, donated US$1 million to establish the Discovery Grants program.
Throughout this time, support of the Foundation grew tremendously. Since that first $26.50 donation in 1917, the Foundation has received contributions totaling more than US$1 billion. More than US$70 million was contributed in 2003-04 alone. To date, some 914,792 individuals have been recognized as Paul Harris Fellows — that is, someone who has contributed US$1000 or has had that amount contributed in his or her name.
We are much closer to a more peaceful world & international understanding asLisa Tompson, Chris Ryan, Donna Nuzzo-Muller, Jim McInnes, Elizabeth Nuboer Ranjhan, & Anuras Ranjhan become Paul Harris Fellows.
Awards for perfect attendance:

Donn Sladen
Friend of Scituate Rotary Club – Maureen Gill
Rotary has grown over the years to a large organization with a Mission Statement, Goals, Objectives, Financial Reports, and Benefits of Rotary
Rotary membership provides the opportunity to:
• Become connected to your community.
• Work with others in addressing community needs.
• Interact with other professionals in your community.
• Establish contacts with an international network of professionals.
• Develop leadership skills.
• Involve family in promoting service efforts.
Another benefit of Rotary is the wonderful feeling that you get when you do something good for another person. This benefit is not written, but I know that you all feel it. I see it in your eyes.
I think that this is the reason that many of you belong to Rotary. You may not have known this when you first joined Rotary, but it has grown on you.
Today, as I was riding back on the train from Manhattan, I had the list of all our members in front of me along with the all the events of the year. I started to think about all the contributions from each one of you to the club.
This year, I began a program where you the members contribute to the weekly program with guest speakers. I knew that you are all very interesting people. So, each week I asked a member to host a speaker or program.
We live in a very dynamic, interesting world & many of you tapped into the wonderful resources we have locally: Politicians, Intellectuals, Civic Leaders, Historians, & Entertainers. The benefits of this program were; that it gave you all a vested interest in our Scituate Rotary Club & we were all able to learn more about you.
Unfortunately, this year we didn’t have enough weeks to have all of you host a speaker, but I do think that Bermuda Mike will continue this program.
So, as the train rambled on, I was thinking about all the events of our Rotary Club year and the wonderful times we all enjoyed and the fabulous things you have done. All of you have contributed to the great success of our club:
The Pancake Breakfast,
The summer gathering @ the Kelley’s house,
The Art Auction,
Janice Brown’s Christmas party,
The Christmas Party at Barker Tavern,
Our Christmas Party here at SCC,
The New Scituate Telephone/Directory,
VonTrapp Concert,
The many, wonderful speakers who entertained and educated us,
The St Patrick’s Day Parade Hotdogs,
And of course the District Assembly in Bermuda.
Any time I asked one of you to join a committee, find a speaker, greet a speaker, and contribute your time, money and/or energy, you always said yes.
You asked, “What can I do to help?”
You impressed me with your enthusiasm for projects, for offering a helping hand or an encouraging word to someone in need.
All these things remind me of President Kennedy’s famous speech where he said “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”.
And so I know that you have that wonderful feeling when you do something to help another………..

Fitting
to the evening of ceremony and fellowship, the Lance VanLenten Trio

projects include: The Centennial donation of the Scituate High School bike
rack, medical containers to Rwanda

Conservation Outreach. There are many more not listed, but an awesome job,
nonetheless! We presented Suzanne with a beautiful plaque to honor her
year of dedication to Rotary.
Also
honored was Dietrich Bilger as Rotarian of the Month. This award was given
for his ability to change the character of our club by boosting both
membership and renewed involvement in fundraising for donating to new
