ATTENDANCE:  President Mike, Christine, Walter, Bill, William, Diana, Karen, Joe, Bob Price, Alden, Connie, Ben, Lewis, Robert, Sandy, Janice, Lisa, Candace, Judy, Janet and Bart. Guests: Janet and Dave Isbrandt, speaker.

The Pledge  of Allegiance was led by William Clark who had just returned from extensive business related travel.

The Invocation was given by Bob Schipul.

Captain Mike announced that the Cushing School-Scituate Rotary Christmas Party would be held on Tuesday, December 4th at the Barker Tavern. Janet, who is coordinating this event, discussed details with the club. She requested that anyone planning to attend should contact her right away as she needs the final "head count" for Barker Tavern

Mike also noted that the Scituate Rotary Club Christmas Party would be held on Wednesday evening, December 19th, at Janice Brown's home and that we were all appreciative for her to host this event.

Janet gave a presentation of the importance of the Rotary Foundation and the goal of this club to have all members be sustaining members (individual annual donation to the Rotary Foundation of $100). Captain Mike announced the recent award to the club for being  the highest per-capita club donor to the Rotary Foundation in District 7950. As an excellent example of the importance of the Rotary Foundation, Ben Summers gave a wonderful reading of an article which appeared in the Boston Globe this week on the Gates Foundation-Rotary Foundation joint donation of $200 million for  the polio eradication program.

Bart gave his report saying that he has become the temporary "Keeper of the Key", which is the key to our Post Office Box, on the request of our Secretary Sandi. Also, the Council on Aging's contact person for the elders in town, Mrs. Nancy Lafauge, has contacted the Club through him asking for $1043 for teeth for an old lady who has no funds. 2 Years ago Nancy also needed the Club's help to get an elder teeth. The Board has decided to help out, like last time. Mrs. Lafauge knows our situation and will only ask us for help if it is really needed. Then there was the mail: a letter of thanks from Elisabeth von Trapp for our moral support, a letter from the Wheelchair Foundation, the quarterly letter from the Angkor Hospital for Children in Cambodia, the winter program of the South Shore Arts Center and information on our Telephone Book Fundraiser."

Bill gave a wonderful WOW written by a child with a terminal disease reflecting on the importance of finding joy every day in our lives. We should remember that all our lives are terminal on this earth-We have "our prognosis" although many of us do not yet have
"our diagnosis".

After dinner, David Isbrandt gave an excellent presentation on his summer experience in Kenya which focused on visual testing and distribution of eyeglasses for individuals there. He discussed personal experiences accompanied by slides which demonstrated the impact from one-on-one personal interactions. "Changing people, changing lives".

Respectfully Submitted by Captain Mike and Crewman Bart

President Mike outlined the reason for the interactive session between Scituate Rotarians and the Scituate High School students in the Service Learning Course. He introduced Dan and Patty Schmelzer who gave an excellent presentation on the Capstone Ministries Program in Kenya sponsored in part by the Scituate Rotary Club. They discussed the poverty in the country and the associated problem of abandoned children that the Program takes off the street and cares for in their Center before reuniting them with some member of their family. The interesting role and success of microfinance in the community was outlined. The Scituate High School students were very engaged with the presentation asking many questions The discussions were lively.

The students consisted of three groups and each group presented their service projects that used fund raisers to support homeless children, to "adopt" a soldier in Iraq giving encouragement with communication/material, and to make a financial contribution to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Rotarians and students discussed many ways for interaction in their service projects.

This luncheon session was productive and, just before adjournment, arrangements were discussed with Kaitlin St. George to bring some of her Service Learning Course students to a meeting in the spring for follow-up presentations on service projects.

ATTENDANCE:
  D. Bilger, M. Cohan, B. Coulter, C. Cramer, Dietrich, W. Heller, B. Hurwitch, M. Jenkins, M. Johnson,  K. Kelley, Joe Kelly, A. Mitchell,  L. Nestor, B. Nuboer,  Donna M. Nuzzo-Mueller, Bob Price, Chris Ryan, J. Schmitz, C. Slader, D. Slader, B. Summers, L. Tompson, D. Waterfield

GUESTS: Alla Bova (translator), Heather Collins, (Candace guest), T.B. Ezopobeor, Mary & Ron Goodwin, Konstatin, Belaine McCabe, C. Mitchell, Amy Joe Aronson-Silverman, Svetlena, Kakatrina (facilitator).

President Mike opened meeting with Pledge and Prayer. Mike gave an update on Bob Schipul’s condition. Mike reminded us that November is Rotary Foundation Month. He introduced Belaine McCabe Amy Jo Aronson-Silverman from Habitat for Humanity. Also introduced Heather Collins. She and Candace will give a talk on Irish Immigration. Bart was asked to introduce all our guest from Russia and their translators. Bart did a great job on the names. All these guests were warmly received. They each gave a brief thanks to their hosts and to Rotary for having them.

Janet gave us a update on Bob’s condition. He had a stent put in but his enzymes were high. If the enzymes came down he could come home on Friday. Donna Nuzzo-Mueller told us about her students at High School that won back the field hockey title from the teachers. Bill Coulter read us a special message for veterans day called, “What Is a Vet.” It was a great tribute. We had our Happy & Sad bucks and Chris Ryan had the lucky number for our Queen. Dinner was served with our guest leading the way.

Belaine McCabe gave a wonderful talk on two children from Belarus , Nick and Jena and their mother. These two children were children victims of Chernobyl . These children were Scandanavian in looks as they had blond hair and blue eyes. The children and their mother were Christians.  The mother carried a prayer book with her all the time. She had the blind faith that all would be well with her children. It was a culture shock to them to be here for medical treatment. The language barrier was very difficult. Belaine ended her program by reading a poem that her grandmother, Margaret Reilly, had written. It was beautiful.

Candace and Heather Collins gave a talk on the program sponsored by South Shore Art Center for the Wampatuck School on Irish Immigration on the South Shore . The program was for 3rd grade students. The students were enlightened by this program through poetry, song and dance. Heather also gave a wonderful account of the Brig St. John that went down around the Minot Ledge. They hope to do other such programs in the near future.

Meeting adjourned without further business.

Respectfully submitted,
Diane Waterfield
