A t Jamie’s we had many guests: Don Wharton, our troubadour for the evening, Rev. Robert and Sandy Schippl, Connie Mitchell, Gail Goodrow (out and about looking great) and Carol Sladen. Walter Heller remains in Florida , probably at South Beach (we hope he doesn’t get into trouble). President Bart is attending President’s Night at the South Shore Council. Bill Coulter was anticipated, but no show—Joyce is a little under the weather. Boy, are they going to miss out hearing Don Wharton.

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS; From Judy for all visitors, Sue for being able to brag about our club to Weymouth’s past president, Bob Shippl glad for Don Wharton, Joe for all the visiting wives, Ben happy to have his son rise above medical costs to put in new floors (there’s always happiness with sadness), Donn for his wife’s surgery coming up this weekend and also Carol’s 39th birthday, Alden for a brand new queen size bed after 49 years (who can resist those Jordan’s ads), Janet for surviving a root canal and feeling fine (is the woman made of iron?).

The Amaryllis AIDS Fundraiser will be June 4th. This was started by the wife of an ex Rotarian’s wife—Linda  Kennedy, a concert for $25 per person at the Weymouth Elks. Call Janet if you want more details.

Rev Bob Shippl introduced Don Wharton,  a Lutheran with humor (just joking). We found out soon enough as he launched into some of his own songs, written from his life’s experiences. He’s a singer, songwriter from Nashville with 15 albums in 25 years, traveling around to tell his unique story. Kind of a John Denver    without the hat (“I’m not a hat kinda guy”.) Lovely, relaxing, gentle songs with intermittent topical humor. But  what made up sit up and pay attention was his experience traveling in Russia . He  had gone there with a group to bring supplies to a small town that was without the essentials that we always have. On the way home, his plane ditched in the Bering Sea in water that would freeze a human in 15 minutes. Though personal strength and his belief in God, all members were saved even though they were in the water for nearly an hour. He took his first helicopter ride (on the rail) and broke his glasses during the disaster. God was saying “you still can see the light without your specs” and “don’t look down when it’s too scary”. And that’s the story he sings to his audiences. Everyone will have a dramatic rescue in their lives; stand by for spiritual intervention.  He’ll be reprising his act Thursday night at the Lutheran Church in Scituate , and he’s    well-worth a second visit..

WE WILL MEET AT Jamie’s next week unless you hear differently from someone. We’re on the short list over  there where we can be replaced by a prom party or a boy scout troop. Keep checking your phone messages.
