WEEKLY NEWS – COMMENTS.

Great to see Jed again. Matt is looking good following his surgery. He hopes to be back by the beginning of June. Bart was at “President’s Night” at the South Shore Council. We were all missed there but Bart assured them that we had a long awaited meeting with Mr. Hynes in Sciutate. Pat Henderson is on an indefinite medical leave, Paula has requested a leave of absence until September 1st. I have approved her request on behalf of the club and have invited her to participate whenever she feels she has the time free to do so. Ben and Dietrich were both excused.

Dietrich being away we were spared heavy fines but we did have generous happy bucks given. (Jack’s) Linda won the lottery but did not pick the qoh with her 1 try. Joe was shocked to learn we only get 1 try now!! Donn reported that his lottery ticket from last week got him nothing – which Sue says is not right! Hummmmmm What was that about?

We are hoping to get the Wisconsin students to join us for dinner before they leave for their seminar in June. Otherwise we will not meet our Russian exchange student.

Phonebook Update: 47 of 202 old ads are in, $10,200 of 31K needed is in, we have 1 new ad via Donn. Keep up the hunt for new ads!

MEETING HIGHLIGHTS.

Frank Hynes was our guest speaker. He arrived quite late and did not have time to eat. But he gave us a thorough view of what is happening on Beacon Hill . Mitt Romney basically is doing a good job. We will have a budget in time-a first in 15 years. It is a very difficult and moribund economic time in the US and MA. Wary consumers and increased unemployment continue and contribute to the problem. An anomaly of this recession is that many of the lost jobs are high-end types of jobs (those earning >$70K) which has a greater effect on the State economy. The negative effects are likely to continue for many years. The dotcom states are having the most difficulty, especially CA and MA. Our consolation is CA is much worse!

So: the State has no money, hi-end jobs are scarce, 30% of the State budget goes to Medicaid whose costs have risen 75% in the last 5 years, 36,000 unemployed are removed from Medicaid eligibility and show up in emergency rooms for free care, the cost of everyone’s health then rises and therefore insurance premiums rise and employers cannot afford the benefit and someone else loses a job. When Mr. Hynes concluded with telling us he was Vice Chair of the transportation committee, I could not resist pointing out the connection between “Safe Routes to School” and the ever-increasing health needs of Americans! Walking improves everyone’s health. He must help pass the bill to fund whatever it takes to get our kids to school safely and create better health for all of us!  (Jed, thanks for taking notes for me.)

It has been a pleasure writing again!

Yours in Rotary, President Janet
