Scituate Light Newsletter

June 11, 2003

WEEKLY NEWS /HIGHLIGHTS/COMMENTS.

Harbormaster Frank Regan discussed his two previous careers last week before he talked about his duties and his associates on the waterfront in Scituate. A Lt. Col. (Retired) in the U.S. Air Force, he had flown over 400 Blackhawk Fighter missions in Viet Nam before retiring in the mid 70's. "It was tiring flying three a day, a total of 12 hours even though we didn't have to fly during the monsoon seasons," he said. In 1976, he formed a company which supplied material for the U.S. space program based in North Carolina. He sold it 20 years later and retired again, to Scituate. The Harbormaster's office employs four full time assistants and between May 15 and September 15 another eight part timers. Several illegal moorings have been eliminated. There are still over 350, all of them currently under lease. The staff has rescued eight boats since May 1. Working closely with the Coast Guard (whose office is adjacent to the Harbormaster's), the staff are now underway with towing training sessions. Frank said he "enjoys working with the people" he oversees.

Last week's attendance: Janet, Bart, Sue Katz, Ben, Sue Kavanagh, Loic (our newest member) Walter H., Bill Coulter, Donn, Dietrich, Alden & Connie, Christine (Frank Regan's wife), Judy (attended the scholarship presentations at SHS).

Janet, Bart and Sue Katz attended the DARE graduation June 10, also at SHS. In Scituate, our Rotary Club is the biggest benefactor for the DARE program.

Regarding the immobility of the Police Department's Safety (VW) Car; The vehicle needs repairs and an inspection revealed it was not worth the cost to repair it. Donn said he would check on its repairability.

Happy/Sad Bucks from: Bart (wife of new Rotary International president has died), Sue Katz (attended DARE graduation, scratched Walter's vehicle), Bill (pray for the Bish family), Alden (pray for Bill's wife), Sue Kav (her parents' 50th wedding anniversary), Loic (attending the 50th party), Walter (his vehicle was not damaged), Janet and Dietrich.

Fines collected by Dietrich: his own, Bill, Alden, Janet, Sue Kav.

Bart has been visiting other area Rotary Clubs and we may have a new member (a resident who works for Reebok and is a member now of the Canton Club.)

Alden offered to reserve grills for our annual Pancake breakfast August 2nd. Thanks to Bart for all the recent publicity in the Scituate and Marshfield Mariners ...
