July 9, 2003

Meeting Highlights:

Guests for the evening--Angela Ponte, District Rep, Karen Kelley and the parents of our guest speaker, John & Cary Talcott. Missing are Jack Borror, Jed Fitzgerald, Dietrich Bilger, Bill Coulter. Where are you, Roger Jacobs?

President Bart visited with Comcast in order to film our evening meeting for cable tv. He was doing very well until the weather knocked out the electricity halfway through the meal. But try checking Channel 10 to see if he was successful.  We can use the medium to great advantage for our club and our community.

Happy Bucks from Angela Ponte for voting OUR installation the best of 6. Of course. Ben Summers for his grandson playing in an all-star game. Alden for the beauty of his rose garden. Carol Sladen for her son's birthday at Barker Tavern. Janet Schmitz for the pleasure of her sister's and best friend's company close by. Beatrice Hurwitch for a 4th BBQ with her neighbors. Suzanne Kavanagh for the influence of Rotary around the world and in her own backyard. Bart Nuboer because he didn't know he'd have to work this hard. Loic Meston was happy to have his wife on only one crutch. Sue Katz had the magic ticket, but drew a dud and won a dud of a lottery ticket.

Installation on the first new member of the year, Beatrice Hurwitch, was a pleasant change in protocol. Angela Ponte did the honors and lent a special grace to the event. Beatrice joins us as an outreach deacon at St. Lukes. She has 2 children and at least one grandchild. PP Janet introduces her as a "huge heart and able hands". She's an international traveler and we're happy to have her back in Scituate. Each club member welcomed her with a handshake, a nice personal touch.

Our speaker, Georgia Talcott, was the winner of the White Water Seminar trip and came to speak to us of her adventure in Wisconsin.  She first thanked us for the opportunity to meet and share with 1000 students from all over the world. The topic of the seminar was "Making Peace and Managing Conflict," with many speakers on familiar tops--the Israeli/Arab conflict, the role off the UN, the purpose of truth in World Peace. A powerful moment came when a holocaust survivor spoke to the group. Georgia gives credit to her high school history teacher--Norman Shacoshis--for giving her a strong historic perspective.  She left us with a thought-provoking quote: "Terrorism is the war of the poor; War is the terrorism of the rich."

The phone book committee has been working to a frenzy as we come up to the closing date of July 15. President Bart reports that we have $42,500 so far with 53 ads outstanding. Do you know how great that is! Nice job, but don't stop quite yet. I see another $6000 in our future.

Next week we meet 2 of the 3 scholarship winners at the Rose Garden at Chez Mitchell, 150 Old Main St, Marshfield Hills. Bring hors d'euvres or a  dessert, your spouse or friend, and an alcoholic beverage of your choice. Sodas will be provided. Don't miss the beauty of the roses, or the beauty of the Mitchell's, starting at 6 pm.

I apologize for the look of the Bulletin this week. The learning curve for this job is steep, even though I am getting plenty of help. Please be patient and we will get this straight.
