Weekly News/Highlights/Comments

This week, the raindrops weren’t a problem for our scholarship night at Mitchell’s.  The roses were not in sight (except in Connie’s cheeks) and we stayed cool and dry in the 1815 Colonial.  Guests present were numerous: Brian Signorelli and parents Shelley and Bill, Kerry Galvin and parents Joe and Rorie,  Adelcia and her Uncle and neighbor, Christie Stofko. Nice to have Betsy ne’ Mitchell with us in person instead of conversation. Not a guest, but always welcome was our old friend (not really that old) Pat Rega.

President Bart made a regal decision and bid us to eat before the meeting. The table was sumptuous as usual. Of note: macaroni salad by Judy Rego, Rosebud cake from Nancy Jacobs, Fruit salad from Joyce Coulter, shrimp dip from Connie, meatballs from Gail, sesame chicken, and the very popular Taco salad from Karen Kelley. I had a ringside seat at the table (a strategic move that ended up hurting me later) and everyone was more than satisfied. One complaint—“where’s the bourbon?”.

Two of three scholarship winners were there with their parents. Brian Signorrelli was off to Vanderbilt in Tennessee for Economics and Spanish. He has his own business wit a friend, collecting used sports equipment and distributing it to needy kids.  Kerry Galvin won her nursing scholarship from the Joan Lind Fund, and  will attend Colby Sawyer. She has a special motivation from her own family for pursuing a nursing career. Our winners have the greatest gift of “Service Above Self”. The 3rd recipient is currently traveling Pakistan with his father, and we hope to have him with us next week.

We were honored to have Adelcia with us, last year’s scholarship winner, to tell us of her progress at Quincy College and Worcester State. Her accomplishments as a new visitor to this country are magnificent, and she has great support from her uncle and neighbor.

Christy Sofko was presented the check for the Cliff Rogers Library that PP Janet and Jack Borror have been carrying around since March 6th.  Jack was to make the presentation, but chose the high seas in Maine rather than be with us. If I were Christy, I would run to the bank to insure cashing—it’s past 90 days old. The Cliff Rogers Library serves the summer needs high school and college students. It maintains itself with the consignment shop proceeds on the top floor, so be sure and visit the library on your next shopping trip. It’s a good contribution to literacy.

The phone book is winding down this week and the numbers are staggering. With still 50 ads outstanding, $47,500 has been collected, and we’ve 31 new ads.

The Pancake Breakfast is coming up fast. Ben Summers is working furiously on placemat ads, the posters are ordered, and there’s a new addition to the menu—good coffee (for a change) and bacon. Tickets will be passed to the members soon.

Next week we hope to have the third scholarship winner with us. And Bill Coulter will give us a history lesson. We hope to have everyone that was missing this week.

Bart's Bark:

It was really nice that Amanda Gontarz, reporter for the Marshfield Mariner, was with us last night. She was especially interested in our donation to the Clift Rogers Library, as that is a Marshfield institution. But she was now also witness to the way we give farewell scholarships to our High School Seniors. And it was nice that one of the students of last year was present to report on her use of the funds.

The phonebook is in its final stage and is better than in many years past. The Pancake Breakfast is starting up and members will be asked to sell tickets soon.

Thanks for your enthusiasm!

Bart.
