A small group met at the Mill Wharf last night for a great meal with friends and guests. A few were missing and on the road to various corners of the world—Jack Borrow in the South, Walter Heller in Greensboro, NC and maybe Alden is away on his 2 week February trip while he has the floors redone in his house. Also, word is it that Beatrice was ill and we send her wishes for a fast recovery.

President  Bart continues to recover and will be un-tethered today. Free at last.  Gail Goodrow‘s doing well and even driving herself to rehab. I can hardly wait til the spring and summer season when almost no one gets sick.

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS:  Janet is ecstatic to have 2 new grandsons and brought a picture for us to oooh and aaah; Joe for his wife’s recovery; Loic for successfully setting up another household (his 3rd) in Newburyport for Suzanne’s job; Loic for a friend that is ill;   Bill C. for the recent death of his Marshfield barber of 38 years; Carol Sladen for Janet’s new twins; Sue Katz for all the care and concern for her sick dog Max; Judy for a wonderful visit to the Westminster Dog Show in NYC (she hugged every dog in the      place).

Bill Coulter presided over the meeting in Bart’s absence. As usual, he brought dignity and professional austerity to the position. Unfortunately, the members didn’t warm to that approach and he gave in soon after.  He shared some personal letters with us, one   from his Aunt in Mississippi who shared her literary insight to her experiences. Now we  know where Bill’s literary streak comes from—it’s in his DNA.

Janet brought us up to date about our concerns with maintaining membership. Paul Welch has asked Walter to represent us at PETS (presidential elect in training) and then the rest   of the members/officers will gather around and support him at the meetings do he isn’t responsible for all the work.

Interesting note: a cook/chef at the Mill Wharf approached me about our scholarship program at Rotary. He’s in a 4 year program at Vo Tech studying the culinary arts and works part time at the Mill Wharf for job training. This satisfy our vo-tech scholarship (if he qualifies), a scholarship we have a hard time awarding.

Our speaker, Mary Stack, is truly what she believes in—a Renaissance woman.  She has been a media professional in 2 countries, England and the US . She has taught   literature and poetry at Milton Academy and she worked to establish a women’s magazine, worked in television and is currently setting up an art exchange in Hingham .    She made a documentary on women astronauts at NASA and that’s where she met her husband. She is drawn to ideas and urges us to be creative on all fronts. It’ll make a world of difference in your life, and keep you from drying up intellectually.

See you at the Mill Wharf next week, and we hope to see some of the absentees back     with us. The food is excellent—don’t miss it.
