SCITUATE ROTARY NEWSLETTER

ROTARY NEWSLETTER JULY 25, 2007

ATTENDANCE: D. Bilger, L. Burridge, Candace Cramer, B. Coulter, W. Heller, B. Hurwitch, J. McInnes, M. Johnson, J. Kelley, Karen Kelley, A. Mitchell, R. Schipul, S. Schipul, B. Summers

NEW MEMBERS: William Clark and Diane Waterfield

We had four new guests at our Club meeting. President Michael introduced his sister and brother-in-law, Susy and Bruce Robison from Pittsburg , PA. Bruce is an Episcopal priest at St. Andrews Church and a fellow Rotarian. He brought us warm greetings from his East Pittsburgh Club. Also attending were Rotarians from Hingham , Kim Granatino and Dave Damstra. They invited us to their Club Clambake on Aug. 23 at the Sons of Italy Hall in Cohasset.

President Michael had the pleasure of inducting two great new members, Bill Clark, who was sponsored by Dietrich and Diane Waterfield, sponsored by Sandi Schipul. The ceremony included a reminder of the Rotary Four Way Test which incorporates Truth, Fairness, Good Will, Better Friendships and Benefits to all concerned. It was a good way to give a summary of our club and to inspire our newest members.

A quick update for our 2008 Phone Book was presented by Bob Schipul and he recommended that we consider a color format to both front and back covers, similar to the Cohasset book that he demonstrated. Chris Ryan affirms the additional cost of $600, as it the expense is sure to be recovered by interested advertisers. The contract is ready to go to the printers, so any new ads need to be tightened up ASAP. Hingham Lumber needs an aggressive visit-are they on anyone’s list? Contact Chris Ryan.

Bill Coulter’s Words of Wisdom were very poignant when he spoke about the procedure of honoring the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery . He told us that the guard takes 21 steps in front or the Tomb and makes his about face every 21 seconds as a reminder of the initial 21 gun salute. He is replaced every 30 minutes. This rotation takes place 24 hours a day 365 days a year and has been uninterrupted since 1930. Not even Hurricane Isabella deterred this post when our government lifted the watch. Our devoted and brave soldiers volunteered to fill this duty despite the grave danger the weather presented.

That was truly Service Above Self and those soldiers lived the Rotary Motto.

We were left with words of service from Mike with the plan to be involved with the Peace and Conflict Studies Program, Polio Plus(polio eradication), the Rotary Clean Water Program with the local assistance for our own Scituate water conservation outreach project.

Respectfully submitted,
Sandra Schipul

ROTARY NEWSLETTER JULY 18, 2007

ATTENDANCE: D. Bilger, J. Brown, L. Burridge, W. Heller, B. Hurwitch, M. Johnson, J. Kelley, A. Mitchell, B. Nuboer, D. Nuzzo, B. Price, J. Rego, C. Ryan, R. Schipul, S. Schipul, B. Summers, L. Tompson

GUESTS: Connie Mitchell, Bill Clark, Diane Waterfield, Brooke Kingsland and family, Brittany Holmes and family

Accolades all around for celebrating seniors this week, both our retired seniors at the Senior Dinner on the 14th and to our two high school seniors receiving tonight’s Club Scholarships. It was a pleasure to have 10 guests present.

For those not present at the Senior Dinner, it was given an overwhelming Five Star rating from every table thanks to Chef Eric and his Italian Cuisine, to Walter for his belissimo sauces, our 12 Rotary waiters, and for the surprise visit from the Rotary District Governor, David Clifton. The seniors were moved to take a collection that raised $50 and Chef Eric kicked it up a notch to make $75 to go for Wheelchairs for the Handicapped. He challenged other members to follow suit.

Everyone Smiling at the Senior Dinner

Lisa Thompson presented the Jared Fitzgerald Scholarships to Brooke Kingsland and to Brittany Holmes for their outstanding volunteerism. Both students spoke from the podium of the joy and learning that comes from their sacrifice to others and their continued desire to serve the community.

Chris Ryan presented a Beautification Project to plant daffodils along the pathway of the Sgt. Michael J. Kelley Freedom Trail at Christ Lutheran Church on 3A. It was passed and bulbs will be ordered from Kennedy’s Greenhouse to be purchased by club members at $1.50 each. It is suggested that we buy 10-20 bulbs and be at the Trail on Oct 20th to plant!

The 2007-2008 Rotary Club Foundation Budget was presented by President Michael and approved as distributed. Copies given to each member and are available at next meeting.

The Pancake Breakfast is quickly approaching on Saturday Aug.4, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., so we need many hands to secure advertising donors, pick blueberries, man the griddles, flip pancakes and serve beverages to meet the morning appetites of 500 estimated diners that will show up at St. Mary’s Parish Hall during Heritage Days festivities!

Plan your support at the July 25th meeting before your ship leaves for the Harbor Cruise on the 26th!

Yours in Rotary,
Sandra Schipul

ROTARY NEWSLETTER July 11, 2007

In Attendance: 21 members, 5 guests

The Club had a great turnout for Robert Chessia to present Scituate history through the life and times of Thomas Lawson. A warm welcome was given to all by President Mike Johnson.

Reminders given for:

South Shore Harbor Cruise on Thursday, July 26 –open for reservations

Senior Dinner at The Scituate Senior Center-Sat. July 14 at 1p.m. Set up and servers needed.

Pancake Breakfast at St. Mary’s Parish Hall-Sat. Aug 4. Many volunteers still required in the absence of Janet and Bart!

Joe Kelley shared his visit and photos of the families who were able to attend Operation Purple at Camp Marshall . He was very deeply touched for the Rotary help that made this possible. In response, a thank you letter was read from NMFA (National Military Families Association) for our support to the children of parents of deployed National Guardsmen that enables them to go to this therapeutic camp.

Suzanne affirmed that Road to Responsibility, and the Senior Dinner were gifted with Rotary assistance. She informed us that the installation of the Friendship Bike Rack has been completed and paid for.

Then a whole new perspective of Scituate was given to us through our guest speaker, Robert Chessia who shared his Boston book “The Life and Times of Thomas Lawson”. This magnate transformed Scituate in the 1900’s. The Copper King turned 400 acres of barren rocky soil into a fantasyland he named Dreamwold. His estate included a self-sufficient fire department, an 800-foot riding academy, horse and cow stables, dog kennels for his world famous pugs, a windmill, rose gardens that were world renown, under ground electric cables in 1902, and even a personal direct train line to Boston from his house! Ironically his barns and academy burned down, despite his own fire department and the 60 million dollar estate that he accumulated rendered him penniless at his death. His remaining national legacy is the unrivalled Medieval Water tower that still dwarfs the church spire on First Parish Road. This wonderful slide presentation leaves us with an amazing history of the greatness that once flourished in Dreamword.
