Meeting Highlights: January 28, 2003 Around the Chapter Thank you to Walter, Janet and Sue Cellucci for compiling, writing and producing last week's newsletter. Attendance last week: Janet, Bart, Sue Katz, Ben, Dietrich, Roger and Nancy, Paula, Audrey, Walter, Judy, Jack, Don and Carol, Alden, and Joe. Also guest speaker Mark Mason, Scituate Superintendent of Schools. Happy & Sad Bucks from: Janet (attended DARE graduation as did others); Dietrich (arrived late, has to go to Holland this week); Jack (will miss next meeting); Judy (has a new puppy, Paws); Walter (skiing with 4-year-old grandson); Audrey (didn't get called on to answer pop quiz); Bart (happy to be back); Paula (went ice fishing, but didn't catch anything); Ben (didn't call Janet also); Sue (cousin passed away, frozen pipes); Alden (frozen pipes too); Carole (granddaughter improving her home). There were very few fines. In case you missed it: the Senior Dinner had to be postponed because the Scituate Senior Council is sponsoring an all day trip for its members. We were still waiting for an affirmative response from Chef Paul Mitchell, but he is expected to prepare the meal. Judy is the chairperson. Rotarians are asked to arrive at 5 p.m. to set up the tables and chairs. Seniors have been invited to dine at 6 p.m. Superintendent Mason was principal of the Gates School (3 years) when he was signed to a one year contract beginning last October. Previously, he was at Dennis-Yarmouth and Brockton High School. He said "I am responsive to all residents' questions" and will meet with taxpayers at any time. The annual town meeting will vote on the money needed to open Jenkins elementary school. The School Department's 2004 budget has been approved by the Selectmen. The high school's requirements for certification by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges will be met by March 1st. Of the 3.2% increase in the budget, 97.6% is for teacher salaries. How does the senior class rate among the state's school districts for passing the MCAS tests? We rank 22nd among the more than 300 schools. It appears now that all seniors will pass. Former Rotary president Bruce Sladen's wife Marsha has been diagnosed with colon cancer. She is a patient at Saints Memorial Medical Center, Hospital Road, Lowell, MA 01852. Bruce's home phone number is (978)851-6974. Bart's ticket was the raffle winner. He did not choose the Queen and did not win on the lottery ticket. Alden brought the current issue of Smithsonian magazine and read several passages of an article concerning the current campaign to Eradicate Polio. It did not mention Rotary International. But it quoted doctors who said funds should be raised to find cures for tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS. It also quoted other MDs who are in favor. At the recent District president's meeting Janet was given a video promoting Rotary. Local chapters can arrange to add something about themselves and have it shown on their local cable channel. Ben
