Meeting Highlights: January 8, 2003 Around the Chapter Happy & Sad Bucks contributed at last week's meeting by Janet, Dietrich, Walter, Jack, Judy, Ben, Alden, Joe, Paula and Sue Kavanagh. Fines were paid by Paula, Audrey and Don. Walter spoke about the Christmas Tree fund raiser last month. Many chapters in the area raise thousands of dollars. With most of the work done by Walter, we raised about $700. He asked for help with the project again this year. Don, Dietrich and Jack said they will help with the 2003 campaign. Dietrich presented the club pennants from Rotary Clubs in Basel and Bern, Switzerland where he was a guest at their meetings last year. Sue Katz was unable to attend but received a note from Jed Fitzgerald. Janet relayed its contents. Jed is undergoing chemotherapy treatments at Mass General Hospital for colon cancer. He says this was one of the reasons he resigned his membership last year. He hopes he will be able to return soon. Attempts are being made for Scituate Rotary to hold a Child Identification Program. The Masonic Lodges are the sponsors in Massachusetts. We have been unable to get a response from the Satuit Lodge of Masons. We will keep trying. Dr. David Hart, a Milton dentist and Rotarian, is an area chairman. Our board of directors feels the project should be done while school is in session. Jack Cole, who will speak to us at the February 5th dinner meeting, is a leader in Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP). The organization is in favor of legalizing some drugs. Invited to attend the meeting are Police Chief Brian Stewart, School Superintendent Mark Mason, State Sen. Hedlund, Rep. Hynes, Chamber of Commerce president Claudia Oliver and other local leaders. Paul Mitchell, a former chef at the Life Care Center of the South Shore (now chef at a nursing home in Kingston) will again be the chef at our Senior Dinner on February 19th. The location has not yet been confirmed. Bill Coulter is in the process of selling his home in Florida and notified Don he will be back in Scituate as soon as he does. Ben
Summers Holiday
Greetings from the President I have the feeling that the club has come back together and is working together and that there is very much we can accomplish in the next 6 months. Besides a good project and fund raiser for the winter/spring we still need new members. The calendar is being filled in advance and there are opportunities to invite friends or acquaintances to see what we are about. Please put that at the top of your list of new year resolutions - to bring someone to a Rotary meeting. This is Rotary Awareness Month so be prepared to participate in the crossword puzzle in the Rotarian at the meeting (I will have filled in all the filler stuff.) Any Rotary question is fair game for me to ask and it will cost you if you cannot answer your question. The answers are also in the magazine so you can be prepared. And if you arrive carrying your magazine that could cost you too! In July I promised to read the "Mankind is our Business" essay winner's essay. I did that Wednesday but for those of you who where not there, this was written by a 12 year old Pakistani girl. I include here the final paragraph which I also read as our meditation: There are many types of people in the world. Many make promises, but there are few who keep them. Let us be, then, humans who keep their promises as we pledge to service mankind, day by day, year by year, in all the ways we can. Let us remember that mankind is our business and must remain so as we go on touching the lives of others, not only for their betterment but also for ours. See you next Wednesday, Yours
