Meeting Highlights: October 2, 2002 Around The Chapter October is Vocational Service Month. Dean Tegler will speak on The Four Way Test at the October 9th dinner meeting. The club dinner to hear District Governor Ann Williams attracted only 11 members. Fortunately several came with their wives: Carolyn & Don Sladen, Roger & Nancy Jacobs, Alden & Connie Mitchell. Also attending: Assistant Governor Paul & Bobbie Welch, honorary member Art & Francine Kern, guest George Bohsack (his fourth consecutive meeting) and prospective members Janice Dayton and Shelly Turner. Many members and guests donated Happy Bucks to welcome president elect Jack Borror following his convalescence from heart surgery. He looks great. Bobbie Welch won the raffle but did not pick the Queen of Hearts. And her scratch ticket was not a winner either. Judy Rego, winner of the previous week's raffle, donated half of her $10 scratch ticket prize to Happy Bucks. Incidentally, Judy is coordinating the $1 million dinner at Pat Henderson's on October 23rd. On that evening, Dr. Dennis Snyder of Medical Missions for Children Overseas will be presented the Heart Patient Monitor which was purchased by Scituate Rotary. Spouses are invited to attend to hear about the doctor's travels to perform facial surgery on children on several continents. A reminder from Ann Williams: The Rotary Foundation (formerly the Paul Harris Foundation) seminar will be held at the Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford on October 19th. Registration is at 8 a.m. The workshop ends at 12:10 p.m. for lunch. Cost is $25. Check with President Janet when she returns from the Netherlands before the October 16th Scituate Rotary get-together at Pat Henderson's. Ann was pleased and happy when told how each active member of our Club will become a Sustaining Member with their weekly contributions of $2 for Rotary International. Did you know that after three years of contributing to R.I., the money is returned to the Club to use for its own community service programs? The Rotary Foundation District dinner will be held at the Holiday Inn in Mannsfield (at the intersection of Rtes. I-95 and I-495) on November 14th. Jack Borror agreed to be the current Club chairman of the R.I. 100th Anniversary Committee. The chair changes every year when the new president elect takes over. The 100th birthday occurs in 2005. Ben Summers, Editor, 781-878-4540 From The President's Departure Lounge We had a good meeting last night with a good turn out for the DG's visit. In her address, Ann Williams reiterated the goals and programs of RI and the Rotary Foundation. In the meetings with the officers and board members before you arrived, she learned what we are up to. Well --- you can pat yourselves on the back. She was very impressed that we are addressing all areas of RI concern in our annual program and budget. She especially liked our increase in dinner fee to contribute to the Rotary Foundation as Sustaining Members. I know there is some grumbling about that but no one has come to me directly or spoken up directly against the charge to point out their precise concern. If there is a Rotarian in our midst who does not wish to contribute $100 a year to this favorite charity, I need to know that. Not to talk you out of it, or into it, but to understand that this is so. When I come back from Holland I will be asking each of you to sign a pledge card so that we can "register" intended donors. It does commit you to the $100 a year, but most of you have paid $2 a week already so it will not take much, if any, effort to make up the $100 by June 30th. It will be different for our "excused absence" members. But even of you I expect participation --- after all, think of all the meal money you've saved! It is absolutely true, you cannot be required to contribute to RF as members of RI. But... we will talk... Enjoy the meeting next week and I will be back for all day with Pat and the phonebooks on the 16th. Yours
