THIS WEEK

This week’s $1M meal at Pat’s was very successful. Thank you so much, Pat, for opening your house, but even more for spearheading the project for Medical Missions for Children. And I have to say thank you to everyone for the push to actually make enough money through the phonebook to let it happen. Besides having great food (purple potatoes not withstanding), we had a good turn out and great presentation by Dr Snyder. We have heard the story before but the absolute delight of Dr Snyder on receiving the monitor was apparent. How nice for us all to be able to make a difference! It makes a difference to the children immediately post operatively and for the medical staff to be able to know what is going on. The monitor comes with a lifetime warrantee and will be carried on all missions with Dr Snyder personally. It is not a piece of equipment that will be left behind. I am thinking we may want to put a little metal tag on it saying "Gift of the Scituate Rotary Club."

FROM THE PRESIDENT

This week I sent out a letter asking for commitment to be a Sustaining Member of the Rotary Foundation. I am asking that you make TRF your "favorite charity." This letter is the end of my fund raising effort other than continuing our $1m meals, continuing our $2 increase in dinner fees, noting when members do become SM’s or Benefactors or Paul Harris Fellows, and flashing my Rotary MasterCard about. At the very least, we will as a club make a contribution to TRF (The Rotary Foundation) annually and be able to award Paul Harris Fellows at the end of a year. For that, I am satisfied and we can raise our head at District or International functions.

I sympathize that this club is first and foremost a local, community club. But we ARE also part of a great international organization that makes a great impact in the world at large. I am proud of that connection and am proud to contribute to it and its missions, whether I help create the mission or not. Rotary International is full of men and women who volunteer time and energy (this includes all of us). But any organization that wants to move mountains must plan to do that. And the planning requires a budget. And a budget requires some sense of income. That is where the pledge comes in. I believe it matters. Part of the definition of Rotarian is "generosity." I do not question for a minute the generosity of any member of this club, but I am hoping our generosity can be documented through a written pledge.

Yours in Rotary,
President Janet
