Around the Chapter

Because S.S.A. Dietrich was unable to attend last week’s dinner meeting (he was in Holland on business), no one was empowered to administer fines. He’ll probably have some good prospects and reasons for collecting them at the February 12th meeting.

But president elect Bart did collect some Happy/Sad Bucks. The collection was cut short, however, to hear our guest speaker. I’m sure he’ll try harder to collect from those who wanted to donate last week, including your editor. Contributors were: President Janet, Asst. Gov. Paul and his wife Bobbie, Sue Katz (happy there were no fines),  Alden, Walter (his birthday; didn’t hear how old he is, at 10 cents per year), Audrey and Judy.

Also attending were Don and Carolyn, Joe and Roger. Guests: In addition to Paul & Bobbie and Carolyn were Chamber of Commerce president Claudia Oliver and Mr. Hynes and Speaker Jack Cole, executive director (volunteer) of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition.

Mr. Cole, a resident of Medford, said there are some 3,000 members of the all volunteer organization. ($50,000 was donated before last July 1 when the group was founded with chapters in the U.S. and several foreign countries, including Canada.) Jack and many of the founding members are former FBI undercover agents who feel that criminalizing purchasing, selling and using drugs and arresting (jailing) teenagers mostly is not working anywhere in this country and others who do not have laws legalizing drugs (all kinds, for human consumption). In fact, the federal government claims that catching and jailing users and dealers has not decreased but has increased, despite the tons of imported drugs that have been seized by the FBI in the last 20 years.
