Scituate Light Newsletter
March 10, 2004

This was a quiet night at the Mill Wharf with no guests, just all the members. A chance to sit and visit, relax and catch up with friends. President Bart, looking fit, read a note from Friends of Scituate Hockey thanking us for our support.

Walter will be at PETS today through Friday, getting the high level of motivation needed to take over as President on July 1. It will be the members’ responsibility to give him all the support necessary to keep him presidential. He has great love and dedication to our Club and risen to help in our time of transition. We can do no less.

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS: Judy started of with several bucks for seeing everyone again; Joe Goodrow for Gail’s continued recovery; Alden a happy buck for . . . . . . ; Walter for 2 days of happy house/cat/dog sitting in Plymouth; Bart for visits from family members, and his new position as Treasurer of his Church (a financial guru thru and thru); Janet for Joe’s willingness to take over the speaker’s podium for the evening; Ben for family visitors, Sue Katz for a new grand-nephew born last week.

Instead of Polio Plus, we are now passing the hat for the Scituate Food Pantry. Your generosity is appreciated and means that we’re in the battle against hunger in our community.  Janet reports that the opportunity is wide open for us to sell hot dogs at the St. Patrick’s parade. We’ll be fighting hunger on Front Street since there are no food vendors for the big event. We’re getting the specs to offer a hot dog, chips and a soda for a fixed  price. Off to WalMart and BJ’s to check on the  opportunities for us to have a solid fundraiser.

Joe Goodrow spoke to get us up to speed on the new income tax laws that Bush instituted for 2004. Contrary to popular Massachusetts thinking, the rich do pay their fair share of revenue, cause the deductions that you and I rely on are eliminated for them. It’s just that we hate taxes so much and they’re so complex that we need someone like Joe to know all the details. Imagine having a job when they change all the rules every year! This year there are improvements on the standard deduction, the lowest tax bracket (now 10% instead of 15%) and the highest bracket (no more 39%). The federal estate tax exclusion is up to $1,500,000 and $750,000 for Mass. That sounds like a lot, but if you own a house on the South Shore , you’re worth more than you realize. Oh, and if you have to die, do it in 2010 because there’s no estate tax that year. A very quirky system, we have.

See you all next Wednesday when Mary Bernard, the Scituate High School nurse will speak to us about her community interests. We are working to have a Rotary RYLA speaker to educate us on the opportunities for students to learn leadership qualities.
