Scituate Light Newsletter
March 3, 2004

Guests for the evening are Dom D'Archangelo (he looks much taller than the last visit) and John Curtis, a Rotarian visiting from Hyannis . John worked extremely hard to find our new site, making numerous phone calls to various restaurants in the area. He prevailed, found our club and we hope he returns often.

President Bart is back again and bursting with energy. Can’t keep a good man down for too long. Beatrice is absent for Lent, but it was wonderful to see Jack Borror again after a long sabbatical. Almost a full house for the evening, so much so that we added two more tables.

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS We started with Dom D’Archangelo who was happy to be among us; Bart for feeling a whole lot better, for his twin grandsons and a daughter traveling in India; Alden for his great grandchild improving and out of the hospital though not out of the woods; Also, he saw the Passion and is in shock; Walter looking forward to going to PETS; Bill Coulter’s $6 for his 6 children and a wonderful 50th anniversary with Joyce; Sue Katz for confusion in the early morning that sent her to Newton a week early; guest John Curtis for finding the Mill Wharf in time for the meeting, Janet for Bart’s continued health, the twins and Officer Dom’s presence; Ben’s happy cause he has no sad buck; Carol Sladen for recovering dog Max, Judy for all the happy stories of the evening. Wow, what a lot of contributions!

Instead of Polio Plus, we are now passing the hat for the Scituate Food Pantry. Thanks for your generosity. Janet reports that the opportunity is wide open for us to sell hot dogs at the St. Patrick’s parade. We’re still checking on the details, as it could be a significant fundraiser.

It’s always a great time when Dom D’Archangelo, Scituate’s DARE officer, comes to visit. We enjoy him so much that we pay him to come. In fact, we presented our DARE check to him for his continued vigilance and dedication to our children. “It’s all about the children “ is his motto. Besides DARE, he does open school time, mall trips, Red Sox outings, anything that keeps a child occupied between 2 and 5 pm. Luckily, the town’s budget crunch has not affected his budget—it takes $8000-$12,000 a year to provide the services, tho Dom contributes his own money and time without re-imbursement. He’s a gem and we’re fortunate to have him in our town. The DARE program has recently undergone a $15,000,000 reworking nationally that has increased the partnership between the student and the police department. He teaches the kids to “leave the planet a better place than they found it”.

If you have been to a DARE graduation, you know Dom is our biggest fan—he never passes up an occasion to tout Rotary and it’s contribution to the community. Right now he’s working on getting an updated Officer Safety, our V W mascot. He’s off to see if he can get a deal from Dan Quirk on a new bug. The old one has no seat belts (as a 5 year old noted), so it’s not safe enough to be on the road. The purchase will be a joint venture between the Police Department and Rotary.

Come next week to the Mill Wharf and partake of good food, good talk and camaraderie. Much conversation about the new Mel Gibson movie, The Passion. It has prompted the increased exchange of some fundamental ideas. A good thing.
