Scituate Light Newsletter
March 30, 2004

Lisa Thompson, Scituate substitute teacher, has returned to our meeting as a current guest and potential member. Better hop to on that fireside chat while the fire’s hot. Alden returned from his fast Florida trip no worse for the event, though somewhat tanned. Walter Driscoll showed up at the table, and for some people, they wondered who he was.

The Senior Dinner is coming up on April 14 with Paul Mitchell, chef to the South Shore Stars. He puts together the unarguably best spaghetti dinner I have ever had. We’ll have to pick up wine, lottery tickets and the left over pancake breakfast placemats for the big event. It’s at St. Luke’s and set up will start at 5:00 since the guests start banging at the door by 6:00.

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS Walter Heller was happy for a great trip to the Leadership Conference last week; Alden for a safe return from Florida and reaching another milestone—age 81; Lisa Thompson for Alden’s story and the pleasure of substitute teaching 1st graders at Jenkins; Janet and Bart for Roger Jacob’s and Walter Driscoll’s 30th Rotary anniversary; Donn Sladen for being one week early to a wonderful sunrise at Pier 44; Judy for having a positive outlook. Some of us were having a hard time coming up with a happy thought under all this rain (very badly needed, though not the flooding aspect of it).

There is $594 in the Queen of Hearts bin. No winner though Alden came close again with the jack of spades. He was hoping to pay for the Florida trip. While surfing the internet he found that Chinese food is very expensive in Hong Kong. The price of a meal at their Rotary meeting runs from $300-$750. I’ll bet Loic can find a more reasonable meal over there.

Bart and Walter are great believers in the PETS and Leadership conferences. It’s like a shot in the arm for the upcoming year. Goal setting, management ideas and membership fix-up, as well as great speakers with a good sense of humor. They even finagled a meeting of RI President Glenn Estess, a miracle since there are 565 districts and he was at our meeting. In many ways, we can share the strengths and accomplishments of our unique club with other would-be presidents. We have a lot to brag about, like our high contributions per member, our (Janet’s) Rotary centennial idea for sharing the road and our committee presidency for the 2004-2005 year. Next year’s motto is “Celebrate Rotary” reflecting the 100th year milestone. Our goals are CLEAN WATER, HUNGER and LITERACY.

Donn, the Board meeting is Monday at Pier 44 at 7:30 a.m. so you can see their redecorations again. And next week, the speaker is Steve Warner, the man they are about to re-name the town after. Maybe spouses would be interested in hearing how our town is changing.

Beatrice and Jack and Bill and Loic, we miss you.
