April 7, 2004

A room full of guests to hear our speaker Steve Warner—Connie Mitchell, Gail Goodrow, Joyce Coulter, Nancy Jacobs, Ed Corbo. Also joining us was Bart’s close friend and Walter’s neighbor, Nick Scholtn. The weather has finally showed us a sunny side, so everyone was out to partake of a meal at the Mill Wharf.

The Board of Directors met this week at Pier 44. The new décor is lovely, but we hear we’ll have to find a new “permanent” dinner spot. We’re looking into the River Club and Jamie's in Marshfield. The Board voted to accept new member Lisa Thompson and setup a fireside chat. The financial reports for the Club and the Foundation indicate we’re in good shape. A thank you letter came in from police Chief Brian Stewart for the D.A.R.E. contribution. And a letter from the High School for our contribution to the Suicide Prevention Program. The Club voted this night to donate $400 to the High School Library, which has a limited budget for new books.

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS: There were so many visitors at the meeting that I was unable to hear all speakers, so I apologize for missing anyone. Janet for her visiting Mother, Beatrice for her return, Bart recommends the “LadyKillers” movie with Tom Hanks tho’ probably likes the Alec Guinness original better, Donn sad but proud for his granddaughter’s husband signed up for Iraq, Ben has $5 worth of good news and happy he has the money, unlike last week, and thanks to Joe Goodrow for doing his taxes so he owes NO TAX, Alden for Bill Coulter speaking at the Senior Men’s Breakfast his now famous Civil War Speech, Judy wishing everyone a Happy Easter.

Alden Mitchell gave us a Scituate Rotary history lesson on our 35th anniversary. Actually, it was 35 years ago April 9 that 25 men met at the cold Yard Arm restaurant. Four of those originals are still with us almost every week: Donn, Alden, Joe and Art Kern, an honorary member. Alden brought old photographs of the group and the initial meeting. What a contribution these men have given us! And Alden has been invaluable on maintaining the wonderful historic traditions of the Club.

Steve Warner was also sharing history with us. He is one of 3 brothers that are changing the face of Scituate Harbor today, but he had to go back in history to accomplish it. His photos of the cargo ships and the mill that was on this exact site in the 1800’s show the harbor before civilization changed it. And here come more changes. He has started 2 condominium buildings that will hold 45 condo units, a 300-seat theater opening in June, a day spa, an ice cream parlor and a women’s workout place, Curves. He also has renovated the River Club and leased it for functions. Eventually, the Welch Building block to the old Flounder Inn will have to be improved. The times they are a changing.

Next week, be at St. Luke’s to prepare the Senior Dinner. Be there at 5 pm for set-up and those people that must bring the wine, lottery tickets, floral arrangements and placemats—you know who you are. This is the best spaghetti dinner on the South Shore, thanks to Chef Paul Mitchell. Entertainment is the ever-popular and always upbeat Wild Bill Coulter.
