June 16, 2004

Connie Mitchell didn’t have to worry about the weather.  The day/evening was about perfection. We all came together with our fiends and family to honor our two scholarship winners along with their families.   Everyone was there, except for Ben (who had a scheduling conflict) --and the bugs.

As is the tradition, the food and drink offered was delicious—Gail Goodrow’s meatballs, Linda Borror’s  Mexican dip, Carol Sladen’s potato and macaroni salads, a variety of tasty dips and Judy Rego’s honey baked ham in pineapple, strawberries and cherries (mmmmmm). Walter’s bacon wrapped scallops disappeared in seconds and his fancy sculptured watermelon was almost too artsy to  eat.  And if you didn’t  have enough to eat and drink, there was a cake for dessert. Those Mitchells are so lucky to have the leftovers from the church picnic on Sunday and the Rotary picnic on Wednesday. Time for a larger refrigerator? Their hospitality insures that the evening in the rose/ hosta garden is indeed one of the special events of the season.

Josef Rogers, our first scholarship winner, has a great way with words.--- his application shows it. His immediate future will be at BU where he will study political science and hopes to go into public service after graduation. Our second winner, Haley Kingsland was there with her full family--parents Robert and Sandy and sister Brooke. Her plans are not quite finalized, but she will attend Stanford in California and study the humanities.

President Bart went through the agenda from the Board of Directors meeting, but most minds were on  the food and the lovely evening. There was a “thank you” letter from Dr. Snyder for our $2000 contribution to his latest children’s mission to the Philippines . We voted to go ahead wit the 2004 Phone book-- a good  thing since Bart had already signed an iron clad contract with Ed Fox. Every member has responsibilities to do their part to make the book a smashing success. Everyone is welcome to go to the Scituate RI Installation if they don’t want to attend ours on the 30th. Everyone is invited to Dick Anderson’s Installation as District Governor on July 1.

See you next week at the Barker Tavern where Colin Johnson will talk about the energy crisis in our cars.

We have received 7 ads for the phone book so far, totaling $2000. A strong start out of the gate, Seabiscuit.
