Meeting Highlights:

July 17, 2002

Around the Chapter...

Guests at last week's meeting included Joe and Karen Kelly (their second appearance) and Judie Rego, head teller at Scituate Federal Savings. We hope they'll all become members shortly...

Happy (and a few) sad bucks were donated by Sue Katz ("I won $100"), Jack, Janet, Bart, Sue Kavanagh, Ben and Joe Kelly...  We had a winner! Guest Judie chose Janet's number and the first card she selected was the Queen of Hearts.  Back to 52 cards at the next raffle.

Our two scholarship winners will be our guests at the July 24, dinner at Mitchells'. They are Adelcia Ribeiro, a native of Cape Verde. She will first go to Quincy College to obtain some needed credits to enable her to attend Worcester State College where she will major in occupational therapy. John McLallen II, whose father served in the U.S. Navy, will attend Mass. Maritime Academy. You'll meet them if you attend the meeting this week.

Heard that President Janet's daughter will get married on July 27th. Congratulations!

We'll miss sergeant at arms Dietrich (he did a great job in collecting bucks and fines last week.) this week. Said he is going to Europe.

Assignments have been made for supplies for our Pancake Breakfast at St. Luke's Church Saturday, August 3rd. The breakfast starts at 7 a.m. But if you're staffing the event you should be there as early as 6:00 a.m. Cost is $3.50 per person.

We only had 11 members at last week's dinner, below our average. Past president Walter was at the South Shore Council meeting.

Bart's Views of the Rotary International Convention

"8,000 members attended; 3,118 clubs were represented. Four public service awards were presented, each with a check for $100,000. Recipients were Jerry Lewis of the U.S., for Muscular Dystrophy Association; Mikhail Gorbachev of Russia, for his International Peace Foundation; Norman Borluch of the U.S. for his program to educate everyone in the world; and Ken Beering of the U.S. for the Wheelchair Foundation. Borluch has proposed that after Rotary International helps eliminate polio around the world by 2005 (the 100th birthday of Rotary), R.l. should launch a worldwide program to educate people. The 2003 convention will be in Brisbane, Australia; 2004 in Osaka, Japan; 2005 in Chicago."
