Meeting Highlights:

July 24, 2002

Good Morning, Fellow Rotarians:

I have not yet determined what happened to Ben but will update you on our party last night.

This was my first visit to Alden’s Rose Garden so I had the pleasure of that treat plus the pleasure of welcoming our scholarship recipients for their awards. We welcomed John McLallen and his mother, Maureen and Adelcia Ribeiro and her half-brother and neighbor. After a bit of eating and visiting we learned a bit about each student and their future plans. John is going to summer school at Quincy College as well as working and in the fall begins at the Maritime Academy on the Cape. Adelcia is also attending summer school and will continue for a semester at Quincy before going on to Worcester State to study Occupational Therapy. I have advised them both that we intend to invite them back in the spring to tell us about their first year’s studies. Our scholarship committee out-did themselves this year choosing these 2 students. They have both learned the gift of giving in life and acknowledged our duty, privilege and obligation to serve mankind. They will both go far and make a great difference in our world.

John’s mother, Maureen, is a paralegal in Boston and will be coming to our meeting in 2 weeks to consider becoming a Rotarian. She has raised a very service oriented son and I find that a great recommendation for membership!

There is no meeting at Pier 44 next Wednesday (I have informed them that we will not be there). We are meeting jointly with the South Shore Council clubs for a clambake in Hingham. It costs $25 (not pre-paid) for 2 lobsters, clam chowder, steamers and corn on the cob. If you prefer, you can request steak in advance. You must tell them you are coming for ordering purposes. I have advised them that 4 are definite (the Borror’s, Sue Katz and Walter) If you said you are going, GO. If you want to go, contact Dave Damstra, President of the Hingham club: firec43thegrinch@hotmail.com

Next Saturday, then, is our Pancake Breakfast. We need help setting up BY 6 am as well as help cleaning up after the breakfast, to leave the church as we found it. Paula and Sue Katz have the tickets – the more we pre-sell the more money we make! So if you did not show up last night, please contact one of them for your share. We accept contributions in lieu of attendance for those too far away or disinterested. 100% participation is really needed. Blueberries must be picked on Thursday morning, 7am. Call Joe Goodrow for details.

The phonebook was to go to the printer on the 30th but Sue and I have decided to extend the time a week or so as money is still dribbling in. So it is not too late to get one more ad! (PLEASE!) We are up to 39,000 and think we may reach 41K. But 45 would be awesome...If you have not personally secured a single ad, please get out there are try! It feels really good when you succeed!

Last week I won the queen of hearts when I wasn’t looking and ‘took home’ $60. I promised you a round of drinks and provided that last night. The balance of my winnings I am setting aside for a Rotary Leadership Institute seminar scholarship. I will advise you when I receive information on this year’s schedule and if someone is willing to go I will contribute $30 towards that fee. I went last spring and it was great! I will do part 2 this year sometime. It is a one day commitment you will enjoy.

We are in need of program suggestions for August. Connie Mitchell said that she saw my name down for August 14th and she wants to hear about Barcelona. I told her she missed Bart but she insists she wants more on the 14th. Hummmmm….. I have a CD with pictures that I’m working on so maybe we will have more to share after all. But that still leaves the rest of the month. We have the post mistress on ‘back order’. And it is summertime in Scituate. Should we do a $1m meal and swim at James Landing? Ideas, please.

So I am off to my daughter’s wedding and a week sailing. I will see you, for sure, at the pancake breakfast.

Yours in Rotary,
President Janet
