Meeting Highlights: August 28, 2002 Around The Chapter We welcomed Barbara Stieglitz, president of Scituate Health Services, at our August 28th dinner meeting. She has been a member of SHS for 16 years. The organization was started in 1919 during the Flu Epidemic. Officers are elected every two years. They conduct blood pressure clinics, lazy eye clinics and cholesterol testing. The group's by-laws say the SHS provides services and education. It depends on donations. The annual appeal letter will be in the mail this month. The organization has purchased books and videos and donated them to the Library. It is considering doing a program on the West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease. Barbara has been a nurse for some 40 years. The SHS has 22 active members; half of them must be nurses. They can be reached by email at: scituatehealthservice@yahoo.com. The organization awards two scholarships to high school grads every year who plan to enter the Health Service field. A current project is to survey homes of people at risk to see if they have correct and visible street address numbers on them. The group also works with the Scituate Food Pantry and would like to start a pet therapy program for shut-ins. Happy and Sad bucks were contributed by Janet, Alden, Ben and Walter. It was announced that the Scituate Food Pantry is in need of canned meats, fish and fruit juice. They also need bags, paper and plastic. It was suggested that members bring such food to each dinner meeting and the contributions will be brought to the pantry. Ben
Summers From the President Two months have passed and much has happened: Our scholarship winners received their checks at a gathering in Alden’s Rose Garden. More than 40 new phonebook ads sold while most of our previous advertisers have returned to us, some with more nudging than others. We had our annual pancake breakfast at St. Luke’s for Heritage Days which was well attended. The club web-site is up and running thanks to Past President Walter and our web-mistress Sue Cellucci. The newsletter is getting into a routine thanks to Ben and Sue. We have added one new member to our club, Judith Rego from Scituate Federal Savings Bank. We have collected about $125 for “Polio Eradication – Fulfilling Our Promise.” I am thankful for the energetic board of directors and looking forward to our influx of potential new members in September. The board are each responsible for bringing (at least) 1 new potential Rotarian to a meeting in September. Each member has been requested and encouraged to do the same. We won’t keep all of them. But we have to ask! Like the lottery, ‘you have to play to win'. Dietrich, besides enhancing the club coffers, is the membership chairman and will attend a Saturday seminar, Sept. 21, by the District. I would love for someone else to attend. If you have never gone to a District event, this is a good one (I know, because I went last year). If you have not been to one in a long time it is certain to re-energize your Rotary spirit! Let me know if you are interested. It counts as a make up meeting. We enter September ready to get the phonebook off to the printer, wanting to commemorate 9/11 in some meaningful way, pushing for new members, and fall activities to include the Sr. Dinner and the Cushing Christmas Party. Our District Governor will visit us on Oct 2nd. This would also be a good meeting for introducing potential members to Rotary. I am disappointed with attendance in general but am hopeful that the fall will bring more of us back more regularly. Yours
