Meeting Highlights:

Around the Chapter

Ed Santos, a past president of the Plymouth Rotary Club, was our guest at last week's dinner meeting. He is currently the District Representative for Rotary International's Polio Eradication fund raising program. (more below)

We received Happy & Sad Bucks from our guest, from Ben (happy to be back from his trip to Australia & New Zealand and sad that he was unable to attend any Rotary meetings in Australia or New Zealand. He said he wasn't in the city on the correct day of three chapters' meetings). Alden (for vacationing with relatives in Atlanta and Virginia); Carol Sladen (for Don's upcoming birthday and their 51st wedding anniversary); Joe (for his 19th anniversary and taking his grandchildren to Cape Cod); Dietrich (who thought his his dog might have been struck by an auto after leaving home); Judy (who had a day off from the bank the next day); Walter (happy to have your editor/secretary's return.) Did I miss anyone?

P.P. Walter fined himself for not introducing our guest earlier than he did. S.S.A. Dietrich threatened but then forgave fines (for lack of authority to fine for the "offences" cited) and eventually fined Sue Kavanagh, who arrived after the prayer.

Roger won the raffle and picked the Queen of Hearts on his first draw. However, since treasurer Sue was not present, no one knew how much he won. Hopefully, we will find out at the November 13th meeting.

Also attending last week's dinner were the wives of Roger, Don, Joe and Alden.

Ed Santos said "We're in our final phase of fund raising" to eradicate Polio around the world. From the 350,000 cases of polio when the campaign began, there are about 1,000 remaining in India and China. "We have and will continue to be successful in eradication by 2005," the 100th birthday or RI. The organization must still raise $80 million. The Gates Foundation will match $25 million and the World Bank has also committed several millions. "It can be done and will be done. Two drops of vaccine can save a life," Ed said.
