SCITUATE ROTARY NEWSLETTER

ROTARY NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 19, 2007

ATTENDANCE: President M. Johnson, D. Bilger, L. Burridge, W. Heller, J. Kelley, B. Nuboer, D. Nuzzo, B. Price, B. Schipul, S. Schipul, J. Schmitz, B. Summers, L. Tompson, D. Waterfield

GUESTS: Kaitlin St George, Kim Wood, Michaela Connolly

All hands were on the back deck to greet our three wonderful Scituate High School guests despite a cool ocean breeze, blowing in at sunset. The "alfresco" dinner meeting was opened with Lew leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Ben offering a very fitting invocation.

Bob S. gave us the good news for our 2008 Rotary Phone Book-$5,200 received in ad renewals during the first week of invoice returns. Congratulations to Dietrich, who brought in a payment from a new sponsor, McSweeney and Ricci Insurance. We are grateful for all new leads. Does anyone else have suggestions?

Donna Nuzzo gave a heartfelt thank you to Rotary for the Paul Harris Fellow Award and for the additional pledge of $1,000 to be given for Rotary projects on her behalf. She considers this honor to be received as a commendation for all the efforts of staff and students who work as a team. She added that this year boasts the best professional environment and also a very highly motivated student involvement. We all shared her positive energy as we welcomed SHS teacher Kaitlin St George who heads the Service Learning Course.

Making way for NEW GENERATIONS, Kaitlin revealed how her SLC is a very popular elective for her junior and senior year students. She said that the course empowers her students to interact with local, political and international issues. The in service projects are developed and initiated by the students. One group even raised $3,000 for victims in Sudan by printing special T-shirts.

Michaela highlighted the project she selected which was to reach out to the underprivileged in our community with student fund raising to purchase suitable clothing for them.

Kim's service project will raise awareness for leukemia patients. She will enlist the help of the community through walkathons and a student coin drive.

NEW GENERATIONS are certainly involved in the outreach of our own local high school students. We will continue to encourage the interaction between the shared visions of students and Rotary. The Interact Club will be super charged with our common community concerns which span all ages.

When we place "Service Above Self", many windows are opened and much can be done through combined effort. Our 2007-2008 theme of ROTARY SHARES motivates us all.

We thank all the hearty mates who donned their coats to join us for this wonderful meeting. Hope to see you next week for the inspiring message from Lew Burridge on his experiences in Vietnam and being one of the first eyewitnesses to Saigon after its fall.

Respectfully submitted,
Sandra Schipul
Secretary

ROTARY NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 12, 2007

ATTENDANCE: President M. Johnson, D. Bilger, J. Brown, M. Cohan, B. Coulter, C. Cramer, W. Heller, J. Kelley, A. Mitchell, B. Nuboer, B. Price, C. Ryan, B. Schipul, S. Schipul, J. Schmitz, B. Summers, L. Tompson, D. Waterfield

GUESTS: Ed Fox, Marion Noble, David Tompson

At the helm, Captain Mike opened the meeting with the monthly Rotary theme “NEW GENERATIONS” and we will pursue this as we meet next week with SHS teacher Kaitlin St.George. We will look forward to being able to work with students and creating continued Rotary awareness and perhaps offering a connection with local water concerns through Scituate Water Conservation Outreach.

Chris took orders for our Daffodil Bulb Beautification Fundraiser. Please give 100% support to allow us to plant our goal of 450 bulbs along the Michael J. Kelley Freedom Trail. So come prepared to order in the next few weeks or contact Chris personally. The club plans to plant them on site at Christ Lutheran Church on Oct. 20.

Sadly, we remembered that Scituate resident, Paul Cahill gave his life to protect our Boston citizens from a tragic fire. He put “Service Above Self”, when he returned from a Maine vacation early to substitute duty for a fellow fire fighter. Our sympathy goes to his brave family and in respect we will look into a future Rotary Scholarship in his memory.

Ed Fox was a return guest to encourage us with our good efforts to meet Phone Book deadlines and secure new ads as well as following up with renewals. We need everyone’s help and thank you in advance, as this increases our balance of outreach funds for service work!

We miss Beatrice and continue to offer her our best wishes as she is recovering well at home. Hope to see you soon, Beatrice!

Be aware that “The Russians are Coming”. We mean our Rotary sponsored Russian Open World representatives who now come annually as an exchange group of Russian health officials, doctors and teachers. They will be here the first week of Nov. Our club has tentative plans to accompany them to Harvard to attend a medical simulation presentation.

Pack your bags for a “Brown Bag Lunch” at Janet and Bart’s over the noon hour on Wed. Nov. 14. It will allow us to be with Dan and Patty Schmeltzer for their Capstone Ministries update which we support, as well as being able to go to the evening dinner for the Paul Harris Foundation in Mansfield . Come to both and get extra attendance credit!

Don’t say “I didn’t know that”- at least after being WOWED by Bill to learn the origins and meanings of: Cloud 9, Limelight, May Day, Tennis’ Love, and the crystal clink of a toast. If you still don’t know-you missed a great evening!

Respectfully submitted in Rotary,
Sandra Schipul
Club Secretary

ROTARY NEWSLETTER September 5, 2007

ATTENDANCE: Pres. M. Johnson, D. Bilger, L. Burridge, W. Clark, B. Coulter, C. Cramer, W. Heller, B. Nuboer, C. Ryan, R. Schipul, S. Schipul, D. Sladen, B. Summers, L. Tompson, D. Waterfield

GUESTS: Carol Sladen, Ed Fox, Jim Leslie, Betty Leslie

It was a night to share much information, beginning with guest Ed Fox, fellow Rotarian and publisher of our South Shore Phone Books. He complimented us on being on the cutting edge of producing a “green” phone book! Even though it will have a color frontal format, it is environmentally friendly. We look forward to next week’s Club Meeting to concentrate on the Phone Book progress. Please be sure to be on hand!

With Chris Ryan’s Bulb Beautification Project, we will buy, sell and plant daffodils for the Michael J. Kelley Freedom Trail. Order sheets went out, so check with Chris if you didn’t receive one and plan to bring your spade to plant on October 20th at the Trail site.

Ben Summers shared some pretty amazing information on the origins of Rotary’s 4-Way Test. It began as a store policy for the Walgreen family at their initial pharmacy in Chicago . It became a compass for the workplace as well as a prescription (RX) for living. Its message was adapted and used by Club Aluminum to focus on right business principles in the midst of scandalous and unethical practices during post depression times. Now the logos are public domain and have long been adopted by Rotary International. THE FOUR-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do:

I. Is it the TRUTH?
II. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
III. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
IV. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Diane Waterfield shared poignant information with us from her friend, a retired WAC from the Korean Conflict who sends her recent color photos from Iraq . The 4th Infantry has erected memorials of fallen comrades with simple, silent reminders by displaying the soldiers’ boots, rifles and helmets. Likewise an Iraqi sculptor produced a permanent bronze memorial from the remains of the fallen statue of Saddam Hussein. This man is the one who helped to cast Saddam’s likeness and so hated the regime that he offered the tribute to our American Soldiers as his offering of gratitude.

Our featured speaker, Jim Leslie, came to share his background on the Rotary Foundation as it gave him the opportunity to pursue his Doctorate dissertation as a Rotary Fellow at the University of London . It allowed him to study at the British Museum Library and to travel to Shetland Island where his own grandfather had lived. Jim and wife Betty were witness to the funeral of King George VI and even saw Sir Winston Churchill at 10 Downing Street ! The kindness and generosity of International Rotarians made all this possible as they shared their country, lodgings and rationed food during their stay. Jim returned to the US and became a chaplain at Wesleyan College in Ohio . He and Betty now reside in California but have close ties to Scituate because they have a family cottage on Lighthouse Road . We were glad they could be with us to share their Rotary experiences in England . It truly strengthens our connections with Rotary family- locally, nationally and globally.
